I am a new visitor to this site and i have previously found some really helpful information here.

I have bought a 1984 hj47 ute, and I love here to bits (yes, I'm a girl) I have had her resprayed and she looks fabulous. But, being a girl, I desperately need power steering for me to be confident and comfortable driving her around.

I have sourced and obtained a power steering kit (as advised from other information from this site) but my mechanic, brilliant diesel mechanic, is having some difficulty fitting the parts as they should be. He says he can do it but he wants to do it in the most efficient and economical way possible.

Can someone please supply the technical information as to what modifications are required to fit the parts of the kit to my ute. We do have the right parts (from the HJ45 and 60series). The mechanic is having trouble with the right hand engine mount bracket, and the spacing of the extra pulley which runs the belt to the crank shaft.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. not sure if it is agreeable with this site to offer phone number to discuss the situation in person, if so please give me a number where my mechanic can talk to someone who can help. otherwise if the information could be posted on this site that woudl be great.

Beth

I am no expert in steering wheels but if my mechanic told me that he doesn't know what to do then I think your car might be at the wrong shop. I have found that your normal service station mechanic is great with general maintenance type stuff but when it comes to more specialised installations and modifications then it's best to go to a company that specialised in that area.

Just my 2 cents

Hi, if you haven't already sign up on

But be warned it is very addictive and you will lose many hours surfing there. It will also inspire you to spend lots on the old girl.

The other thing your mechanic will find after fitting the power steering box is that the steering column out of a 47 with manual steering is then to long. About 80 mm if I remember rightly. You have to modify the right hand mount on a 47 as it is in a slightly different position than a 45. If you are using a 60 series pump you can use the pulleys from a 45 but will have to modify the coolant outlet at the bottom of the radiator.
LOL and that's only the start of it...The end result is worth it, or at least the people I have done it for think so..Ends up being fairly pricey.
