We're preparing for a trip from San Francisco to Fairbanks, Alaska and return, starting in April/May next year. We intend to buy a caravan and 4x4 in San Francisco, where my daughter lives, do the trip and sell the rig before we return to Australia, hopefully only spending $10000 Aust for each vehicle. Whatever we get back selling them will be a bonus.
We're allowing approx 10 weeks in total.
Any suggestions/hints from whoever has done the Alcan or something similar will be appreciated.

Many thanks, Geoff

Hi Geoff, I travelled the western states for a couple of months many years ago and we hired a very large motor home. Prices were much cheaper away from the big cities (LA & SF). I am guessing that this may also be true also for buying. I have heard of dealers doing a sell and buy-back deal and understand that this is not unusual.
I would suggest spending a few hours using Google :-))

Hi Geoff...I will try this again although a shorter version.. being an expat I find myself living in Calgary Canada these days. I have done the trip from SF to Calgary about a dozen times..the trip fro Calgary to Fairbanks via Dawson many many times.

Let me know if I can offer some tips and things....one is..think more of June/ july rather than April/May..snows in Canada you know ? but whats a few feet a day to an Aussie boy :)

As we live in Qld we want to see a bit of snow. We went by boat to Alaska in
May a couple of years ago and walked into a 100deg heatwave. Decided it would be better to go early in the season rather than later as if it snows in May at least we have the hope it will clear.
Also, we've been to the USA in the high season before and you can't move for people, bloody tourists. I'm a bit antisocial and would prefer less crowds.
Thanks, Geoff
