Hey all,
I have been going back and
forth choosing between a swag, or a tent... I think 1-pole tent is the way to go for my partner and I. On our budget, it will probably be an OzTrail Tourer 9.. seems to be best value in that price-range... hopefully I can afford a
Southern Cross or similiar in a few years and hopefully the oztrail lasts that time...
but I digress... I was interested in swags mostly because of the convenience of the bedding.. particularly the mattress... borrowed one from a friend once and wasnt that a nice sleep!
so.. I want a mattress that I can purchase (not one of those regular inflatable (deflatable by night), but a nice foam one on-par or better in comfort than the swag one... I want to know what brands are out there and what people recommend and also, what kind of premium I will be paying and how long I can expect the mattress to last.
Any other info would be a plus!
Thanks in advance.

Swags are great and have there purpose,i own one B&W Redgum and a single blue Oztrail,Although throw a female in the equation and its not a great idea,no standing room to change etc etc...Egg cup foam on the top of the original foam supplied (i have bad back) and have slept on river pebbles its that good...

Is that the mattress with the swag?
I agree about the lack of standing/changing room being a concern for the better half...
Thats what has settled me on the tent really (as long as there is enough room next to the single pole, but I think I would just get a sidepole kit if it wasnt acceptable, or even spend a little extra and get the tourer 9 plus)...
What type of mattress is that you have?
Can I buy good mattresses like that seperate?
Did some searching and found what looks like nice thermarest
camping ones but wow... priceeyyyyyyyy.
Saw some other people talk about "4wd mattresses".. dont know waht these are or where to get them from.. another
forum on here quoted $69 purchase price (each... single i assume) back in 2005... and he said he loved them!
Sounds good to me

Hiya GiveItAGoGavo
Yes i just lay it on top of the foam supplied with the swag,Its Dunlop i think purchased from Clarke Rubber (good quality)..I have a Tourer tent also and that middle pole is great if the missus loves pole dancing but if she doesn't lol get the side pole and nick it off

HA!! Side pole kit is probably a go then :)
I might go check out CR tomorrow and see what they have I could use...
Could I maybe design my own mattress? I could easily get the cover made for it so if I can figure out a good foam combination... maybe something high density and quite thick for bottom and then less dense compressible ripple or eggcarton shaped foam on top... they dont even need to be glued together, simply held together in the cover should do it...
That might even work out cheaper!

I agree with AOS swags. I have the double swag for my self and just spent 5 weeks
bush camping the kimberleys. And no problem sleeping in it at all.

Gday,
Go to a canvas
shop and get your swag made to suit. That way you can get any width, any length/ Poly bottom or not, pockets sewed in and any type of matress you like.
You can still use you swag in the tent....I do.
Cheers

Yep I agree too, swag with a tent is the best option.
If the weather is sweet and with no insects you can sleep in just the swag or if it might rain, it's v.cold, dust storms or there's mozzies etc just put the swag in the tent. if you've used a swag you know how easy it is to fold up and put away much better than making a cot or inflatable mattress etc
My problem is with the new swags that have poles and fly nets and crap. They are small canvas tents not a real swag. A simple swag is the best option. Call this mob, they will mail etc and they know how to do the real old style swags with a zip on each side and foldout piece at your head for your boots or to cover the noggin. No affiliation etc etc etc.

hi giveitagogavo
i own swag's and tents they all have their uses, but if i was to pick one for all occasions it would be the tent, its a no brainer really you are out of the weather, you can store your stuff away if you leave
camp for a while, change in it,one tent will take up less room than two swag's. hope this helps. cheers bill.

Hi to everyone,
Thanks for all the advice and useful input.
I am pretty keen on a swag at some point, but right now am on a bit of a budget and honestly think a tent, with a mattress is a better option for me because, once I factor in the decent mattress purchase + tent, I think I come to around the same cost if I got a decent swag, but of course with the swag there are still the "missing" things... like a place to get changed for SWMBO and so on...
I will get a swag at some point but for now I personally feel a tent suits our need... besides the extra warmth of the swag, and the niceness of the closed in nature of it (I actually sleep better like that), I dont think it has too many advantages for me personally.... as I said, Ill get one eventually thats for certain... but for now I think since Im budgetting... Ill grab a halfway decent tent (oztrail tourer 9 +sidepole kit probably), and invest in a comfortable mattress.
I didnt get to Clark Rubber today to see if I could "build it myself" but I will get in there this week...
Does anyone know of some other manufacturers though so I can look at all options? this "4wd mattress" is what I was interested in but have yet to find any reliable info about them...
also i am not sure if the swag mattress is simply 1 piece of foam, or if they are sometimes different layers joined together or what!
