I can't believe that they have released a new hard floor campert trailer that has all the bells and whistles, and pretty good looking too, for nearly half the price of your high profile brand names!? How can this be? How is it possible to build a trailer nearly identical to those other brands at that price?
Does anyone have one of these new campers? It is on the traders section.

I was thinking the same thing, John. Notice, though, that the bare bones $9.5k one is pretty spartan, but would suit a lot of us who like to do our own drawers etc. and who can't see the value of $30k sitting in the shed most of the year.
As long as it's welded properly, sealed reasonably and the canvas is ok it looks good to me. I did notice on one photo the spring hangers seemed inboard of the chassis rails which looked a bit odd. I think the attaching of hangers in most trailers is underdone - they should be gussetted or mounted with an extra piece of channel or angle IMHO.

Regards, John.

P.S. I think I saw a second hand one in the Trading Post for $8k.

John F,

Fair comment mate. I'm sure that lots of CT entrepreneurs can pick up on the finer details of these things. but for folk like me and lots of other people that just want a camper that sleeps and cooks, and can go through dirt roads, these ones would seem like they would do.

I would find it very hard to compare this trailer to a $30k version....they are still miles apart in quality, features, materials etc.

Without an explanation of suspension setup, i would say that this one is rather simple...no independant suspension etc.

Looking at the towing frame, the good ones are much thicker and stronger. No trailer brakes, no stainless steel components, unknown kitchen setup (is there one??), no/unkown water storage capability, power setup? etc all makes this far from a "bells and whistle" model.

Don't get me wrong, for the price it is probably a good buy for a hard floor setup, just that it is nowhere near a $20-30k setup.

I just noticed that you may be referring to the weblink on that page for the deluxe version. Whilst some of my comments are not as relevant, there are still quality, features, materials that make a difference to the price.

YMMV

Full story here

That "From" price is un-realistic and a bit misleading, as tends to be in advertising.

On Patrol & toni,

When you say that the price is un-realistic, do you mean that it may not include GST, dealer delivery, stamp duty, etc etc?

Full details

Yeah John
the trader ad quotes a $9??? figure, the actual web page quotes a $10??? so I guess from that, that the lower figure is GST excluded, to attract attention and make it appear below 10k in total, which is not the true case.

Nothing new about that, but still misleading. Also the base model excludes what most of us would call basic items, jerry holders, gas bottle Etc Etc.

The whole package could never compare to a fully fitted out currently "known" brand, yet they claim it to be in competion to those brands.

it's kind of like saying that a basic new Chinese car is in competion with a fully kitted German or Japanese car, no way.
Cheers Colin.

Colin,

Funny you should mention jerry holders and gas holders. They were the things that steered me toward buying a Cape York Trailer instead of a Kimberley Trailer. I spoke to the sales rep on the phone, and he said that the Sports RV does not come with jerry holders! Where as the CYT comes with all the things that you would expect. I found that to be a bit weird, not having holders.

on GST
a business can not quote a price to non business end user without GST..the price shown must be the full price to be paid....they can show Price + GST $$$ and give a Total.

Or they can show a total price (which must include GST)...that goes for web sites as well, not just brochures etc etc.

I have seen some clearance bins at trade outlets which has items ticketed at say $9.00 + GST and which does not show a full price including GST...this is technically illegal, but I reckon they are not genuinely misleading anyone by doing that....but it is still not correct

the camper shown in the trader has been doing the rounds in trading post...2nd hand maybe...could also be old photos they are using for their advert i suppose

the 17k still only has a 50 x 50 chassis...bit light on i reckon...especially considering the size of that box on it

Quick look at the photos and I rhink it has the same problem for me as most camper trailers. Not enough clearance in the mud guards.

It is running 235/75/15 tyres and I run 235/85/16, 29" to 32" OD.

Find many CTs have the tyre bottoming out in the guard before the bump stops take up. Find many CTs with rigid axles don't have bump stops on the axle.

When we were looking at trailers we found just because they said offroad doesn't mean they are. Everyone's definition of "off road" is different. Time will tell how good it is. Someone mentioned adding your own stuff later ie. drawers ect. We looked at doing that but found in the long run it was going to cost about the same but it would all be added on not built in. It looks good in the photo but until you actually look it over to see quality of build it is hard to say this is comparible to top dollar trailers. It is cheaper so they saved money somewhere?????? If it is off road ask how it will handle the gibb river road, canning stock route, cape york ect, that will tell how off road it is.

Hey Josh,

Your right...it is cheaper, so they must have saved the money somewhere. and you don't want to be stuck in the middle of no where to find the answer to that question!
I must say Josh, you have a very interesting website. I envy you and your family for getting out there and just 'doing it'! Good on ya. We would very much like to do the same sort of thing, but unfortunately our oldest son is in year 10, and my other son is in year 8. So its a bit hard to just take the out of school and do what we want to do.
But as they say...one day...

Thanks John,
Must say I haven't done much on the web site lately (been having to much fun I think). It has been amazing to do what we have done. We have been very lucky to be able to do it. It's been just over 2 1/2 yrs now. I encourage to you if you get the chance take, you won't look back. Stopping travelling is quite scary for us cause now it is just what we do, it's our life. Not sure how 4 solid walls will go, LOL.

JR,

Could you explain to me how the weight thing works? ATM and GVM, Tare etc etc. I sort of know that one of them is weight without anything it the trailer, and one of them is weight fully loaded. Does this include the spare wheel, water, fuel, food, etc etc?

The only side of this which matters on small trailers is TARE and GVM
Tare is empty, GVM is maximum weight when full, includes everything

Also have to watch GVM of vehicle, this is total weight, car, trailer, load, people, everything. Also braked and unbraked trailer have 2 different limits on the tow vehicle
Keep in mind if you break these limits, your insurances are likely to be invalid
It would be very hard to end up with an off road trailer that doesnt need brakes. ie GVM below 750kg.

Agree with the comments on the suspension with the spring hanger travel very limited, but otherwise the delux version looks a really good starting point.

It looks great the only thing that worries me is the size of the draw bar only
50 x 50 box. If you ever see a trailer that didn't make it back home 9 times out of ten you see the draw bar broken or bent.
I would like to see at least 100 x 50 x 4 or even bigger. 50 x 50 is for a garden type rubbish trailer NOT FOR OFFROAD IMOI.

Cheers Scoof . :-)
