Howdy folks, Just thought in case their are any owners out there of a manual Mazda BT50 or the Ford
Ranger equivalent that some owners including me have experienced premature clutch failure.
Our vehicle is the three litre CRD high body 4X2 dual cab that we purchased new in May 2007 & has done 30,000 K's.
Clutch started slipping, so took it down to our local dealer. I have just picked it up after the clutch plate, pressure plate, fly wheel & throw out bearing have all been replaced under warranty. Apparently the cause of failure was that the throw out bearing periodically got stuck on the shaft instead of freely sliding on the shaft which apparently ( I'm not a mechanic!!) is a bit like riding the clutch.
I know it should not have happened but full marks to Mazda who did not try to duck for cover. They were prompt & courteous in fixing it up which was a big relief to us.
I had a look on the Mazda owners
forum & there were about another dozen owners or so with same problem, same vehicle, all low K's. I've been told it's a hot topic at the moment with the BT50 & Ford Rangers on other 4X4 Forums.
When I mentioned to the local service Manager that I had reason to believe it was not an uncommon problem, he told me that Mazda Australia were "not telling them much".
Anyway, just thought I would share it with you. Cheers

Clutches in modern vehicles no matter what they are these days are crap. Most are probably made in China or Thailand as many of the vehicles are(Thailand anyway) 20 years ago we rarely experienced these sort of problems with day to day use of the vehicle. now every second person you talk to that has a new manual has had or is having problems with the clutch, Mazda,Ford,Toyota,Holdens etc are all in the same boat!

forgot to add i had a 98 mazda van that shuddered badly taking off and reversing(even worse) from new, mazda pulled the box out and found the pressure plate was machined crooked and the plate had the edge worn off it at <20k,replaced it all with no questions asked as they should.

20 years ago they were made with high levels of asbestos. Brake pads went to s@&t for a while after the change over as
well. Anyway you still can get good clutches just forget warranty and spend a dollar to go aftermarket. My aftermarket exedy H/D in my V8 ute with 236RWKW has done 120K on the clutch. I replaced it because the bearing was noisy but the plate still had plenty of life. You get what you pay for and OEM stuff is as cheap as they can get to do the job.

So the story here is "do not allow the vehicle manufacturer to replace the stuffed clutch with a OEM" under warranty

A mate at work had the lot replaced under warranty on a 4x4 single cab after about 25000km.
Apparently mazda sourced some aftermarket clutch for him from
melbourne as he told them he would be towing a boat and the were not confident in the OEM gear. Seems a little strange, but it is all good now, and he is happy.
