Recently someone on here made the comment they wouldnt run 235x85x16 tyres on a 7 inch rim because it exposes the sidewall too much to punctures.
My first thought was bulldust - except then I thought of all the sidewall /crownpunctures Ive suffered with that combination

- sure some were well deserved but quite a few did not seem to be

- Thoughts anyone? I realize a definitive answer is not going to be had due to the unpredictable nature of punctures

Hi get outmore

Yeah I guess sometimes you are just unlucky and pick up a nail or tech screw in the local supermarket carpark and sometimes you drive over some nasty country and say to yourself "well I deserve that"
I run 235x85x16 10 ply's on my Cruiser on standard splits although some people think they are too narrow. So far no dramas with balance, punctures or unwanted steering characteristics. With this combination the sidewalls do seem to be a little more protected than if they were fitted to a wider rim.
Just my experience.

what sort of cruiser?

I think the 80s,75s,79s, ran 5.5 inch wide splits which are techniclly to thin for 235s although many do it. The 100 series standard ran 6 inch splitties which I think is the ideal width for 235s

Read that and thought no way , 7inch was inside the specs for that tire.

Ran my 235/85/16 on 7 inch trak 11 rims for 100,000km on the patrol.

One thing , the width of the tread varies between tyres , at the time (2003) I measured about 20 tyres and got Toyo Opats which had a full 1cm more tread than average.

I think the width measurement is the carcase width which includes a bit up the sides to overlap the walls during the manufacturing process

We have been running 235/85/16 tyres on toyota 1 piece 6.5 inch rims for 6yrs and never had a problem. They have been 10 ply rated tyres also.
