Sandflies at Pt Smith were a near death experience for me 2 yrs ago.
It's a great spot so don't be put off - just use a few kilos of insecticide if you go out onto the flats.
And I am serious. I'm still scratching the scars.
Cheers, I think.

Sandflies are in there greatest numbers on big tides, if there on a low tide at dusk that is a favorite time for them,
Broome township (Chinatown) is the same. Go on a neap tide or a evening high tide and you won't be bothered. I find Bushmans works the best and add few sandlewood sticks around
camp. Only need just before sunset and till dark.
Try Throwing metal lures or using live bait. These are mud crabs around also.
Port Smith is a nice place with
shady camp spots and worth a couple of nights, Theres a
nice beach about 5km before the
park just ask the
park caretakers for a mud map. Anywhere long that stretch is worthy
Barn Hill, Eco Beach.

Yes we were there for the day a few weeks ago. Plenty of sandflies at
Port Smith even in the middle of the day.
We didn't stay but as we were there on a high tide access to
the beach was pretty hard,
Barn hill was better for us anyway.
Port smith would be better if you had a boat.

I was there a week ago the sand flies were present as they are along most off the coastal areas they are managable with baby oil and detol mixed together and fishing was fantastic so when the fishing is good who cares about sand flies just cover up adapt and over come everywhere has its ups and downs.

Was there last year this time - enjoyed it - the nearby bird sanctuary tour was
well worth the $10 each - as for fishing - I didn't, but a bloke next to me caught his dinner each morning on a high tide - quite easy to get a few yellow fin as I recall - the mozzies and sand flies were not a real problem at all in the caravan
park - they could be worse down by the
water though I suppose.

We were there in June. The bird sanctuary is closed. The sandflies were as they always are, persistent. The fishing was OK, and the guy at the caravan
park will take people to the mouth of
the lagoon for a $2.00 donation to the RFDS. He does this every second day.
The sandflies respond to insect repellants and are the ones that don't last long if they do happen to get you.
Cheers
Russ.
