I tried mount the laptop on the wife's knees so she could keep an eye on the progress but too heavy and bit of prob getting air to circulate. Now I got a little eee and I reckon that will be easier. I am putting a lid on the box that replaced the centre consol so it will sit there.
I have seen pics of mounts that bolt to the floor but my hilux is a bit crowded now already but like you, I would like to see some better ideas here.

Go to Johnny Appleseed's site and look through the Ram Mount section for a POD III
They look like this
Image Could Not Be Found
and cost about $330 but can be adapted without the top tray which is over $100 and is too big for an EEEPc
I have one which I would consider selling if you are interested.
Look in my profile for pics of how it mounts to
seat bolts

The one in the pic is about 300mm sq but has a spring that allows one side to pull out and my 15in Compaq just fitted but its far too big in a cruiser.
I made a bracket for a screen and have a netbook mounted on the cargo barrier with a cable to the screen
Pics in my profile.
Its a very adaptable if expensive mount as the legs can be bent quite sharply
and dont break .
Although they are some sort of alloy I have straightened them and rebent
them when shifting it from a Patrol to the Cruiser. Spares are available for $20 - $30 each depending on length
I only have the bits below the tray Have already sold tray

Image Could Not Be FoundBuilt my own out of 40mm PVC.
Didnt glue the tray so that with a bit of gease it turns 360deg.
Bolts down into console mount, strut across front and behind is a 25mm PVC pipe shaped around jesus bar attached with large zip tie, all very solid.
Removal is, cut zip tie, undo tek screww and unscrew barrel union at the bottom.
In reality I never take it out, in fact i dont even lift the table off when not in use.

Steve,
Have the rampod legs and bracket if you want them. The laptop tray is great. I had a custom mount made for the GU by Brown-Davis in Bayswater. Great job. There are a couple of photo's of it on "My Profile". Here's the
LINK to Profile. (Or go to "My Profile" at the bottom of my reply).
Best way to go I reckon. A little bit pricey but
mine has survived some of the roughest country Oz can throw at a vehicle. I have a very heavy Panasonic Toughbook ruggardised computer and it doesn't move a millimetre.
Cheers Mick.

Good timing with this post. Over this weekend i\I am going to try a different approach to same problem. I've just got an Acer Aspire netbook. I reckon I can put stick on velcro strips on the dash and bottom of the computer and it should be able to be placed jus where I want it,. stay firm and be removeable. When not being used in the car, I will seal off the dash strips and those on the computer with a strip of either the eye or hook that I just remove when I wnt to use it in the car. Cost? about $6.00. I'll let you know if it works.
As this means gettiong the thing reasonably close to the windscreen, I might have to add a hood to keep too much light off the screen.
I saw special in
Post Office shops that looks brilliant for in car computer use, A kit with a small. roll up mouse pad: a tiny but quite functional mouse that has left/right buttons and scroll wheel, an led light on a flexible extension arm. the mousepad has 4 USB points built into it. Cost of the whole lot was $29.99 but reduced to $19.99 at PO stores at the moment. It really works very
well and you can plug your USB mouse into the output on the mouse pad. The mouse is
miles better than a track pad. (Why do I still say "
miles better" rather than "km better?) I am looking to mount the mousepad/ mouse and light on a board that can also be secured/removed via velcro. Haven't figured iut just where the board goes yet.

Mr B, you have clearly never tried to use the trackpad on a netbook (especially the one on the Acer which has the buttons in an odd spot) and even more especially, while off road. What do you reckon of the velcro solution?
Since doing the post, If just using velcro, it would be easy to position so it could be changed to angle to either driver or navigator.
Again using velcro, Reckon it should be possible to use a rotating plate as
well so it can easily be seen by passenger or driver. I think the head off a cheap tripod would be ideal and could be quickly locked at whatever angle was needed.

Only one drawback with that is interference with vision.
Have you noticed with taxis they have there display tucked in the r/h corner of the windscreen where it doesnt interfere with forward vision.
I do believe there are guidelines which may prevent you from doing this.
Similar rules exist for aerials within the drivers vision and spotties mounted above bonnet level.
I have
mine mounted so that ALL of it with the screen open is below dash top level.

Good point. I think my line of vision however will still not be impaired. I may not be able to see some of the bonnet. I'll go and check this out. The 60 series LC has a big wide flat dash. I reckon it will mount close enough to the front to be OK. It's an Aspire so it doesn't have a very tall screen, but it's wide.

Nope, it didn't work. The angle on the windscreen is too great to allow the notebook screen to open sufficiently. Gee, those very glossy screens look good in the
shop but the reflections off them are a real pain in the car. Think I will be looking for a non reflective coating for the screen.
Stilll think velcro might be the answer however. Reckon I can make a plywood plate that can be removeable bit sit on the dash top for the computer when needed . This will project a few inches over the front edge of the dash but should be doable. I'll go away to ponder on this.

I use the trackpad on my Acer Travelmate. Took some getting used to but is now OK.
I made up a mount that bolts to the front
seat mount bolts and has a Ram Mount setup on top. Used an old PC screen mount off one of those desktop mounting brackets, that are used to keep the screen up off the desk, as my table. I use stick on velcro to secure the laptop to the table. Works fine.
Yes those glossy screens look good but aren't very practical.
I found the only thing that would mount ON the dash is one of those small touch screens, and they're just too dam small to use comfortably. Even then I thought it interfered too much with vision. My screen sits down low and only just interferes with my line of sight.

Mr B. My next attempt (sometime this week) will be to use ply wood. I'ii cut a piece a bit wider than the acer and long enough so that it goes from the windscreen ans cantilevers out over the front of the dash. I think about 1ocm of cantilever will be sufficient. Velcro strips (maybe three?) running from windscreen to front edge of dash with matching velcro underneath ply. If this seems secure, more velcro on ply and underneath Acer to gold it on. If this moves to much, I'll try to silicone something very low on the windcreen to give a small slot so the edge of the ply cant lift at all. Also thinking of using two sheets of that plastic cutting board stuff as yu can mount two of these surfaces togther and they will give friction, but spin against each other smoothly, sort of like the teflon plates used in tripod heads. This will enable a bit of controlled movement so the acer could be pointed either to navigator or driver. Just thought of this last night, bit haven't measured it all up yet. Also figure I could make an upside down U shaped hood that also attached to the base to eliminate the reflections I'll let you know how it goes.

I've taken the double din radio out of the GU and replaced it with a single din radio and a pocket. I have made a tray mounted to a lump of wood that fits snugly into the pocket. The 10" eeepc sits on the tray (held in place with velcro at the moment) with half the screen above the level of the dash. Haven't done any big trips with it yet but works
well around town.
