Hi all
After reading thread 70970 I was wondering if Vulcanizing kits are still availlable?
I haven't seen them or the patches for years. Back in the early 60's we used them all the time and not the glue on type like today.

Hi Damien
I think you'll find that the type of rubber used in today's tubes does not take
well to vulcanizing.
I recall during my trail riding days we had to switch to the glue on type. It was a long time ago, but something in the name India rubber seems to come up in my mind. Whatever it is, it won't adhere using the vulcanizing process.
Cheers, Dave

Damien
I remember those old vulcanising patches very
well. I must have used a couple of hundred of them at work in the 60s. I am not sure if they are still around today though. There is no shortage of glue on tube patches these days and I would imagine the glues of today are far superior to those of years gone by so the vulcanising type that you set alight with a match have probably been superseded.
There is still plenty of vulcanising being done on tyres today but it seems to be all electronic. The Rema Tip Top catalogue lists many tread and side wall patches that can be either glued on or hot vulcanised. They also have uncured rubber that can be used to fill holes before melting it in along with the patch.

tubes arnt made of rubber there made of Butyl cheap korean tubes can be difficult to get the patches to stick to.
The glue doesnt glue the patches on but rather chemically vulcanises them to get the patch and tube to bond together
