Hi all, this is the first time to explore oz.
I would like to hear from people about their personal experiences with vehicle mods to improve economy.
I own a 2004 Sahara V8 petrol Landcruiser.
I find the economy a little lacking. I have been considering LPG installation,
extractors and full exhaust system, air
snorkel, K&N air filter etc etc. Where do i stop, but before anything is done. Please share me with your mods and what improvement it has actually done.
Further i heard today that the Govt. is going to put excise tax on LPG next year bringing it inline with pricing the same as petrol
Thanks
Tony.

Hi Tony
Your cruiser is about 7% better than my similar patrol so your not doing to bad.
My Patrol is rated at 17.7 lt/100k but long term average is 16.5
The main things I do are to keep the tyre pressures up high , drive conservatively most of the time.
I also run synthetic oils , and have developed a little micro processor unit which shifts the Air/Fuel ratio (the cars absolute reference) a little and this uses 1 or so lt less to the 100k .
My car weighs less than standard despite
winches and lockers etc,
I would fit gas , but I need 1000kms range , so will stick to petrol while I can afford it.
I have thought about your type cruiser , simply todrop fuel use to an expected 15lt/100k but recent tests I have done in 200 series seem to show that it could be sub 15lt/100km and this would be 15% less than my patrol, but then the patrol has its own winning points and I see no clear winner overall at this stage.

The biggest single increase in economy for me has been to slow down on the highways .

The best highway mileage we have achieved is 10.6/100Km between
Canberra and
Adelaide last June.
We were a smidgen under 3500Kg and sat on 100 where it was 100 and 110 where it was 110. Used the cruise control on all flat roads and took over manually as soon as a reasonable
hill arrived. The car has a habit of changing down too early when on cruise control. When on manual we are very light on the pedal and basically let the torque do the job for us.
Very impressed with the Toyota HDJ100 TD 2005 140K. Just got it at Christmas.
Haven't bothered as yet to work out the mileage on rough terrain, snow or mud. And not interested in sand. I used to surf so I have seen enough
sand dunes to do me a 100 lifetimes. So I cannot compare in those cases. Nothing on the roof and no trailer planned.
But we are tickled pink with the highway performance.
My best advice is to keep the roof clear and put a peach under the accelerator pedal. Go easy on the brakes and brake earlier. You don't necessarily have to travel slower just don't rush. Let the car take you there other than you push the car.
My two bobs worth.

LPG won't give you better fuel economy its just cheaper to buy... currently.
My tojo 4.5lt 6cylinder returns 5.5ks per litre petrol and 4.5ks per litre gas. I put extractors on it and upped the tyres from 31Rs to 33x12.5x15
You could/can spend swillions. But in reallity one needs to just live with in or get rid of it.

Tony,
the money you are looking at spending on mods would be about the same as the cost of upgrading to a turbo deisel. The latter option will give you significantly better economy than the mods you are considering. Might be worth considering trading in and getting a turbo deisel.
I used to get 11L/100k out of my 80 series, no
snorkel, 2 1/4 inch exhaust, all very standard and with enough power to satisfy me

From an investment perspective do not make changes to the vehicle, you will never recoup the fuel savings anyhow unless you expect to keep the vehicle forever. If the government brings LPG inline with Petrol then no one will use LPG anymore, so that ends that discussion. Why would anyone use LPG if it cost the same as petrol?
Buy a diesel if you are seriously concerned about your mileage.

Hi Tony
We have a 2003 V8 petrol cruiser and have noticed a big improvement in power and a small improvement in fuel economy since making some mods. When we first bought the vehicle it was as bare as a babys bum with no bullbar or any accessories fitted. At that time we were getting approx. 15.5 l/100km. After fitting ARB bullbar, siderails, 12000lb winch, spotties, cargo barrier, rear storage system (fully loaded), offroad tyres (BFG 265/75/16 AT) and a boat loading roof rack with winch the fuel consumption shot up to about 17.5 to 18.5 l/100km, depending on whether or not the roof rack was on.
We then fitted a K&N filter, extractors, 3 inch exhaust and Airtec
snorkel and fuel economy has now dropped to approx. 15.5 l/100km with the roof rack left on and 14.5 l/100km without roof rack. All up the improvements cost just over $3000 and the power improvement is terrific, especially when towing our 2.5t Kedron caravan.
Hope that has given you a guide. All the quoted figures are with mostly highway travel. Haven't bothered keeping accurate figures for off-road and city driving as I'd probably be depressed again...lol.
Have a look at the
LCOOL site as this has been discussed quite a bit.
