I have the Patrol '04 3.0l at the dealer for a few warranty items but the main one is an oil leak from the front of the engine. Oil was dripping down and was all over the diff (not just the oil from the filter tray drain hose ;) ) The manager just called and said that they have the timing cover off and noticed the case hardening on the timing gears is wearing. The mech asked the manager if he should put it back together or not (bit of a concern) and he said no and is ordering a replacement. I remember someone had an oil leak(from WA?) but has anyone had their timing gears wear or have the case hardening wear and replaced them?

Cheers,

Leroy

Well that's the only thing I haven't replaced on my GU! Hang on maybe it was kind of replaced when the engine was replaced after 195,000kms. How many K's has yours done? How long has the oil leak been obvious?

The leak has only become obvious. It's only ticked over 90k km's so not the sort of thing I'd expect needs replacing.

Hi Leroy

It may pay you to ask on www.patrol4x4.com/forum to get expert opinions.

Earlier this year I completely rebuilt my engine (ZD30) including all the timing gears and chain. From that experience I ponder why your "mechanic" is removing the timing gear cover looking for an oil leak. If he suspects the front crankshaft oil seal then he does not need to remove the timing cover.

Any way who am I to question your mechanic.

Pop over to patrol forum and seek the advice of some really smart guys.

It's the dealer doing the work but one would assume they realise the difference between the crankshaft oil seal leaking and somewhere else. I've read that you can get leaks around the timing cover area on the Patrol forum and it takes a couple of days to fix (very labour intensive like 12-14hrs).
Posted on the Patrol forum but apears not to be a common problem.

I though there was no timing chain in a ZD30

Hi Malcolm,
The gear that was replace was the big one on the lower right. I think it was a helical cut gear. Can you tell pls tell me what this gear drives?

Hi Leroy

That gear is the idler gear for the two small camshaft gears.

When I took the rocker cover off this is what I saw. The gear is supposed to be meshing with the camshaft gears.Mine had snapped that idler gear bolt (my fault for not tightening it - interrupted and forgot to tighten it properly :-( ). That little mistake cost me a couple of grand!! Bet I never forget to tighten in the future.

thanks heaps for that. I just have to hope that the camshaft gears are ok then but one would expect that if they spotted the pitting on the idler gear then they would of inspected the cam gear closely.
Funny how you learn more by mistakes :(
