i have a hj45 landcruiser and some day i might put a 5 speed gearbox in it but the steering is not so good. it seems to wander a fair bit. the tie rod ends and etc seem to be pretty tight, could there be another problem or is this normal for these models?

normal... LOL
it's not as "bad' if you put wide tyres rims on 'em

Good morning Alec.
What motor do you have in the hj45, and are you going to put pwr steering on it, as it will be better if you did that, also 8 x 16 wide rims and tyres, as this will help, and when you put the 5 speed in, put the hand brake on the box at the same time,i have it all on my hj47 and it is easy to do.

Cheers for now...William H...Bunbury...WA

Do you have more than 25mm of play in the steering wheel?
Could be in the steering box

I used to have a 1976 HJ45 and in the bush the wheels went where they wanted to! With the splitties of-course.

Alec L

Sounds like worn swivel housing bearings if you pull them out they will have grooves in them also check steering relay idler adjustment and steering box adjustment

Steering box, S/B sector shaft, steering arm, swivel hubs, wheels bearings, shackle bushes/rubbers, and a mix of tyres, pressures and tread depths...
start there and see what is wrong with it.
