We have taken delivery of a new caravan to tow with our BMW X5. We previously had trouble with a boat trailer which had LED lights until we had them changed to bulbs , so we requested incandescent external lights on the caravan and thought this would be trouble free. Now we have tried towing the caravan we find that , after about 1 minute with the headlights/tail lights on, the tail lights and clearance lights flash and keep flashing. The only suggested solution, to date, is to wire something into the car (quite expensive) or use a "shunt box" when towing. Why are we having problems when there are no external LEDs?

Does your BMW have LED lights?

Reason I ask is that, with the 200 Series Landcruiser, an issue emerged when towing a van with NORMAL bulbs, not LEDs. The normal bulbs require more current than LEDs and the wiriing in the 200 was thin (all that's needed for LEDs) and could not deliver the required current that the van wanted to run non-LED lights.

Its trailer loom had to be upgraded.

I ordered our new van with LEDs because of this.

If this isn't the case, and you towed you boat with the BMW when you had those issues you mentioned, and you are still having issues with a new item being towed then you have to look at what is common between these two scenarios, and that is your BMW.

Have the wiring in the BMW checked for something loose somewhere.

cheers

The only other thing I can think of is that the Tekonsha Voyager trailer brake controller cause a similar problem. Is your brake controller a Voyager?

If it is I suggest you upgrade to a Prodigy or P3.

Didn't BMW have something to do with Land Rover design a few years ago . . . ?

Cheers

Got me whacked why anyone would request the old bulbs over LED's , take it back and have LED's fitted , I'd be asking the Missus for some facial cream to mask the red face ,
I can remember the Triple Roadtrains pre LED lights , the lead trailer was bright, trailer 2 was 50% and trailer 3 20%, nowadays all 3 trailers are the same brilliance ,

This is apparently a know issue with BMWs and LEDs, owing to the configuration of their wiring and switching methods used. BMW have developed a 'link harness' that will overcome the issue. You could try this Link or search out a BMW owner's forum. Good luck.

This is a well known problem with many European and UK vehicles trying to run LED lights on a trailer or caravan. There has been a module developed in Australia to fix this, I saw it on one of the caravanning websites. It sits between your caravan and the BMW and is just a plug in unit. Check out this link.

hi
BMWs are a little strange in the way the ECU reads the power useage.
You will need to get BMW's tow light modul fitted.
I have tried a number of other ways and always come up with faults.
No faults with the genuine unit
