Sir Kev & Darkie
We are looking at replacing one of the Queen sized mattresses in the Trak Shak (haven't decided on it's name yet LOL) and we are undecided as what will best suit our needs.
I have decided that a full Latex will be to much additional weight, and we are considering either a low profile innerspring or going a HD Foam one.
What do most people prefer, I need something that is fairly supportive for my back.
I have checked out Made to Measure Mattresses website but their range is pretty complex.
Any one have any ideas.
Cheers Kev

Our Cavalier has got an old HD foam mattress at the moment, it's definitely past its use by date. I'll watch this with interest, I'm sick of sleeping on top of SWMBO heheh

Hi Kev
We replaced our old foam mattress with a Made to Measure inner spring mattress a couple of years ago.
It wasn't cheap but the service was fantastic and the mattress is great

I agree with wayne, when we bought our camper we put a made to measure mattress in and it was the best thing we did. I to suffer from a sore back and it has been great for that. They are not cheap but we simply measured the trailer space told them what we wanted and it was delivered to our door. Very happy with the service.
Josh
Maybe that could be next months competition, name kevs trailer. LOL

I can fit a standard Queen sized mattress in the Trak Shak so will contact them on Monday to find out $$
What style did you end up with as they have quite a range available.
Cheers Kev

Our M2M has extra sides support (cos you spend a bit of time sitting on one edge) and vents. Can't recall the model but it was the top of the line. Good for my dodgy back. If you are a member of campertrailers.org you get a discount.
That said there are high density foam QS jobs in 4" and 5" thickness that are darn good too. One came std with our Johnno's CT.

Like others I did not take care of my back when
young.
At home we took ages to get a mattress that suited both of us. It's one of those fancy zoned latex ones. I haven't any idea how much my wife spent on it. For
camping we purchased two single size "caravan" 100mm foam mattresses from Clark rubber. (I think $80 ea) They go in the tent or in the back of the LC if the weather is not the best for putting up the tent.
We actually tried them at home on the floor that night, before taking them out of the plastic covering, so that we could return them if needed.
In six weeks on the road not a problem. We are all different and found this the best for us. Minimal outlay, especially when starting out and not wanting to over-spend on the new interest.
Annoying isn't it. We spent heaps for home and a lot less for
camping and both work for us.
Best of luck.
Phil

Phil,
As we have upgraded from swags and tents, we have a 100mm self inflating queen mattress but I don't think work in the camper as we still use it for the swag.

Hi again Kev.
We have elected not to tow anything and not put anything on the roof. Therefore no restrictions where we go.
And I think we made the right choice. We met three broken CT's on the way out of the Bungles. All with broken springs. Overloaded I gather. No thanks not for me.
We took all the extra seats out and its a full sized double bed area on top of the drawers. Clothes, recovery, tools, cooking and food goes in the drawers and all
camping,
water etc goes on the floor under the bed where the back seats were. Only two front seats and they are for my wife and I.
Having the slide out and drop down fridge slide takes a bit of room but its usually only the odd occasion when its raining or snowing that we sleep in the Toyota.
This works for us. As we say "If you want to come with us bring your own car".

The camper is going to be used for family trips more than anything. I still like roughing it in a swag LOL
Horses for courses I suppose.

Kev,
I say bugger the bit of extra weight, go latex. The GLW has a very iffy back and her back is better when
camping than at home on the inner spring.
I've got to get around to building a base for a latex at home.
Cheers,
Jim.

Hello Jim ,
We have a Latex mattress at home and we found it's hot were your body lays on the mattress and you sweat not so bad in winter. But wouldn't have another one. It's 6 years old and it's passed it's use by date no worth all the money, just my option
Cheers Scoof . :-)

In our new van we ended up with this.....
http://www.nce.com.au/catalog100.html
Was a $560 premium over the price of the foam alternative.
Worth every cent - was struggling in recent years to get a decent sleep on 100mm foam in the camper - mainly due to my 'creaky bones' :-o). Being as comfortable at night in the bush as we are at home has been a long time coming !

G'day Kev,
I had an inner spring queen size put in the camper. I was told that most inner springs suitable for campers are usually medium to firm. Initially had trouble sleeping because of some hip discomfort however, went to Clark Rubber and purchased their premium egg shell foam (55mm) and placed this on top of the inner spring mattress. I think from memory the foam was around the $165 marker.
Anyway, it made a huge difference and the bed is now quite comfortable to sleep on.
Hope it helps but at the end of the day it is what you are comfortable with.
I agree though with you, the latex or memory foam mattress are brilliant to sleep on but they sure are heavy. much heavier than normal mattresses
Cheers.

I want a low profile one if possible, about 6" thick at the most.

Gday Kev,
I went to a matress warehouse were the salesperson sold me a dual density foam matress to suit a hard base bed.It has egg shell one side and smooth the other and is medium to firm.It was not a cheap matress but has served us
well for 15yrs and is great to sleep on.Its the creature comforts that makes
camping that little bit better the older we get.
Cheers Guy

Hi Kev,
Somebody recommended Beds Direct on a previous mattress post.
I haven't got any further than getting a price for my
Kimberley. They quoted $295 for their standard innerspring. This seems like a pretty good price.
Kimberley quoted me a lot more for a dual density foam mattress.
Delivery might be a killer to Qld though.

Hi Sir Kev & Darkie
From memory you are in SA....There is a fantastic mattress factory on
Richmond rd(between Anzac Hgh way & Rialway Tce Mile End. We got their "hospital grade" Queen size and must say, prefer that to our "in house" mattress, and the price was cheap as.....could not believe that the quality demanded so little $$$
You will love the mattress and their service.
Best of luck
A & J

100mm innerspring from Beds Direct in
Melbourne is the type that makes us comfortable Jim. You could probably fit a thicker one, but with the side wings on our sides, that is about the allowance. As you crawl in you feel a bit close but not when laying down.

Anotrher supporter for an eggcrate overlay. I don't hink it matters too much what sort of layer you have under it. But for the ultimate in matress comfort, check anything that has a memory foam top layer. This stuff is incredible to sleep on. Our regular QS home matress has it and while wifie and I usually like very different mattresses, both think its the best stuff we have ever slept on. Light mattress weight got handling. Getting out of bed/rolling over vibration free for partner. Blissfull sleeping. Probably too expensive for
camping, but if you are looking at matresses, find some examples and try it. We will never get an innerspring again.

Hi Kev,
Our mattress has the extra side support and air vents. Can't remember the price. We rang them and had a chat about what we wanted ie. back support, amount of time spent spent in the trailer. Because we were living in it full time we got extra support as apposed to the person who goes away for a couple of weeks a year. I would suggest ringing them a having a chat.

We have a queen size innerspring mattress (caravan size thickness) and were given a queen size latex mattress topper - approx 3 inches thick pure latex with elastic on each corner to fit over mattress - we take it off our bed at home and put it on the van one when we go away - it is fantastic!
