"hi all recently bought some second hand tyres on split rims, how do they rate?" Secondhand?

"have normal steel rims on at moment, was wondering if i should swap them round?" Probably? Are they of the same stud pattern or maybe off the same make of vehicle? Is swapping them "round" better than swapping them square?

"or r the split rims better?" Than what?

"any problems with them?" No idea, you're looking at them. Are they round or square?

Mate, please, to get useful answers ask useful questions.

What a most unhelpful response - there was nothing wrong with the original post.

I would answer it myself but I have no experience with split rims so cannot advise whether they are better than normal rims or not.

Garry,

"Better" is a subjective term, what are you measuring "better" against?

The answers you received fit the questions.

Please, you asked the questions and received answers that matched.

If you don't like the answers maybe it's time to look at the questions?

Or do a search using the search function above and you will find a heap of info on split rims in general. As Geoff has suggested, try and expand on your questions and that will give you a greater opportunity to get a meaningful answer.

Cheers

For a sensible answer it would help if you list the following

1 The make and model of vehicle you have.

2 The size of tyres you have on it ,their make and rating.

3 The width of the rims on it

4 The size of the tyres and the make and rating that are on the splits

5 The size and width of the splits.

6 The age of the tyres would also help , there are 4 numbers usually stamped

in the side like 4304 meaning 43rd week of 2004

Otherwise its a bit like doing brain surgery over the phone with a blindfold on

if you get what I mean.

Then perhaps you will find out what you want to know, something possibly

best asked before you buy something like this.

Graham,
#1 question should be- " What usage will the tyres have??"
Up and down suburban streets OR outback 'off-piste' travelling !!!

Geeeez, everybody got some s..t on ya liver? Plainly kNf was asking if the split rims were better than the normal steel rims already on the car! Does it matter what make and model? I don't think so.

Anyway I would not bother with the split rims myself, got 5 in the shed if you want some more, suit 100s rigid axle. IMO much easier to use plugs on tubeless tyres than to pull splits apart and repair tubes.

Tubeless tyres on 'normal' wheels are great for around town. When you pick up a nail or a smll puncture, they can de easily repaired with a plug kit.
For 'outback' travelling, most failures are rock fractures or sharp sticks/roots damage. That when the splits can be superior as you can repair/replace a tube and any case damage.
With a bit of practice, splits can be easy to work on. But I suggest you get an experienced person to show you how it's done.
Just my opinion !!!!

unless your running crossply tyres then your normal wheels will be more suitable.

the fact you asked the question indicates normal wheels will suit you better.

that said with second hand tyres im not sure i d go the the trouble of swapping them

G'day All,

You may think that I am a bit of a dinosaur, but "Bob" is fitted with split rims as original equipment and I have no intention of changing them.

Maybe the one-piece rims will run a bit cooler, but the split rims serve my purpose admirably.

Stu, what type and vintage is "Bob"? I am guessing "he" is a Troopy.

G'day Dick,
Sorry for the late reply, but I was out at work.

"Bob" is a late 2002 HZJ105 wagon.
Split rims were fitted as standard equipment on the HZJ105 right up to the end of production in 2006 AFAIK.
