Might be a dumb question...

Don't want to get the whole hog SA Desert Pass for a 3 weeks trip. I have tried to find out if you can get say a month long Desert Pass rather than a year - anyone know?

And are these available from the info centre in Birdsville?

viz - was in Birdsville last week - it depends on where you wish to go as to what it will cost you. Some areas around Innamincka only require a daily pass which they sell for $8. If you are going across the Simpson then a full pass is required.

The information centre at Birdsville only sell full passes.

If you could advise where you are going it would assist.

Coming into Birdsville the conventional way i.e. from the main road :) from there we go into the Simpson, down to Innamincka via either Poeppel Corner or inside track and via Walkers Crossing and Cameron Corner. From there Tibooburra and White Cliffs.

I have checked out the SA gov. site re desert passes, but cannot find the info I am after. Being locked into a full pass and subscription (or cancellation fee) is also expensive for a 3 week trip.

viz - we just got back on Saturday - travelled from William Creek via Marree to Birdsville - then down the track and across Walkers Crossing to Innaminka . Down to Merty Merty and into Camerons Corner - onto Tibooburra then White Cliffs. We did not have to purchase a desert pass at any stage.

Road all ok - some rough patches but that is to be expected.

viz - from what I understand a full pass is required if you enter the Simpson.

Inside track is closed - reported no longer used.

Viz, in Birdsville you can only purchase a full Desert Pass. As for the Inside Track it is presently closed due to flooding earlier in the year and will be sometime before it opens. So your trip to the Desert means you go in and out from the east or you go in and across to Mt Dare side and down and round to get to Innamincka.
Sorry to be the bearer of tidings that means you will need to alter your trip - but, that's what plans are made for, eh?
You can purchase your passes from a number of places in Birdsville.

Viz, I've just read your second reply - your say you are coming from the main road - there are several main roads coming into Birdsville. Can you give me a bit more information please like which towns you care coming through and where you are starting from and I can give you a change of itinerary that might be more to your liking and save you backtracking.

OK - here's the battle plan - which will last all of 5 minutes (General MacArthur??)

SY to Lightening Ridge to Birdsville, via Hebel, Dirranbandi, Bollon, Cunnamulla, Thargomindah, Nockatunga, Tanbar, then Birdsville Developmental Rd into Birdsville.

Now this is where things get a bit hazy:

Birdsville to Poeppels Corner, K1 Line, Warburton Crossing, north east back up the Birdsville Track to pick up the Public Access Route (junction 26º52'15"S 139º32'08"E) to Walkers Crossing then to Innamincka .

From Innamincka, the Old Strzelecki Tk to Merty Merty, thence to Cameron Corner and Tibooburra.

Then home via White Cliffs, maybe Louth and Bourke.

My Bruiser has a petrol 4.5 that has been chipped and exhausted to be a bit more powerful and a bit more efficient - best economy so far is 13.9 l/100 km. Average at the moment is 16.2 l/100 km. I am calculating worst case 18 l/100 km on good dirt roads and 24 l/100 km on sand dunes. My absolute range is about 600 km based on worst economy with full tanks, 145 litres.

I was hoping not to take extra fuel cans, but it would seem that the above trip is going to be about 630 km - too close. So I will take a couple of cans, 40 litres in total.

My first time driving up there - have flown extensively around there previously - time to get the feet dirty...

Appreciate any comments :) I am all ears when it comes to those who have been there and done it
