depends if it has a SD card in it and the maps on the SD card. If it doesn't have a SD card and only has an Australian basemap, then lower. If it has a US basemap even lower as you need to get maps to suit, presumably Australia.
I sold a Meridian Colour with 512meg SD card, all Australian states maps for $250 plus postage last year. Meridian Gold should be lower, no maps, lower again, basemap,
well, more question marks.

Hello
The Meridian Gold is a good unit - had one myself. However unit is getting a but old and given you can get brand new touch screen colour units for less than $400 I wouldn’t pay anymore than $90 to $100 for the GPS itself, if that. Depends on condition and if any mapset/accessories included.
If no detailed maps are included you will have to lay out another $200 to $300 (same for new unit) unless you can track down 2nd hand copy. Some free mapsets available but they have limited coverage (though Ok for some areas). Wouldn’t worry about the basemap (US or Aus) too much - they basically only tell you what you already know - what state you’re in and if your are on the main highway.
Cheers
Greg

Hi zacc,
My first GPS was a Meridian Gold and I thought it was a good unit. The only drawback is the monochrome screen IMO. It's a bit hard to see at times. I upgraded
mine to the XL colour screen and am very happy with that. I had my Gold for sale but didn't get an offer on it at all! I eventually gave it away to a mate who wanted one.
If you're looking at one, make sure it has all the maps, as mentioned above. Don't pay too much, they unfortunately aren't worth much only because of the newer technology. If money is the issue, maybe it might be better to wait and save a bit til you can afford a colour screen unit.
Cheers
Brian

Hey Zacc,
I still use
mine regularly. I have the Mapsend maps for NSW on an SD card.
It isn't the latest or greatest, but it is waterproof, dust-proof, shock-proof and keeps going. I've used it at sea and on land - dropped a lot in both environments.
As a handheld it does many basic functions very
well without maps.
Cost - whatever you are prepared to pay, but as others have suggested, $200 would be a high price to me.

Hi - just had a look on ebay - the Mapsend product included is Worldwide Basemap - this mapset is not worth two knobs of goat pooh IMHO. It only provides very basic outline of countries. The units Australian basemap is better than the map of Australian provided on this CD...dont include that in the calculation.
Another considertaionis the unit uses serial communication so you will need a serial to usb connector to plug into most modern computers if you want to upload/download data - no big deal but another cost.
So you will be up for ~$170 and still possibly (your choice) need detailed maps and maybe a data cable. Still reckon you are better off getting hold of a more up to date model (Garmin is a good choice for a handheld) but then you will be up for at least twice that amount. If you are on a tight budget then the price is borderline OK given you are getting the 12V power cable as
well (these are ~ $60) . Notice there is a DAST CD for sale as
well on another listing - this is the mapset that will suit the unit
well.
Cheers

PS the map case is "worth" ~$25 as
well to buy new.
I also notice the seller doesnt actually state if the unit is new or used ...or anything about the condition (
well I couldnt see anything about it) - bit sus. Suggest you ask.
Cheers

Depends what you're prepared to pay for it.
If you're prepared to pay more for it, then it's a great bargain.
If you're not prepared to pay that much then it's might not be.
I'll be honest, your original question and your response suggest that you may be the eBay seller in question.

If you just want a unit to backtrack in the case of geographic embarrassment then buy an E-trex for 140 or so.

I think this guy has had a few of them, I bought one and looks fairly new, I already have DAST and basemaps etc
Be aware DAST will only work on 2 GPS - not sure what happens then!
These are fairly old now but are a good basic handheld

"Be aware DAST will only work on 2 GPS - not sure what happens then"
Just uninstall the program from your PC and reinstall and you have another two goes ...ad infinitum

My Meridian Gold is one of three GPS's on my dash, cannot help myself hahahaha, I use the Magellan for speed, heading and time as it is easy to read, also use the screen where it shows the altitude. I have DiscoverAus on my Eee PC and can use it or OzExplorer. I use a GPS mouse with the EeePC. So no this one is not for sale either, another thing that I use it for is finding out where East and West are when setting up
camp (handle held)
