Now, I know this may sound a little strange but, does anyone know of an alarm for tents, campers or caravans ect.
I was thinking of a remote armed PIR type. Cannot be movement type for obvious reasons.

8 ft snake works well lol. Someone suggested used a door alarm type, the one that sounds when you walk through them.

Josh

I can see where your coming from with both suggestions but I was hopping for some sort of PIR type.
If all else fails We do have a 3 meter python which frequents our yard.

G'day Wim,

yes there is a tent alarm. They are very much like a padlock and lock the zip tabs together. They sound an audible alarm if disturbed. Not sure of the cost but I think somewhere between $60-$100. I've seen them at Anaconda and some of the outdoor stores such as Paddy Pallin. There is also one for wrapping around your pack so you could adapt that as well.

Hope that helps.

Cheers Mick

I have used a personal alarm (of the type that have a pin, and when you pull it out it gives off a very loud, shrill sound). Anchour it, tie the pin to the tent flap so that it is tight-ish. Someone enters the tent the alarm goes off .. and if luck is on your side, they will also have permanent partial hearing loss.

As long as you have 12v supply in your van ... any of the normal house alarms will work.

dick smith / jaycar etc have a range of battery operated PIR types suitable for tent applications.

I used a roof rack alarm which would be triggered if the weight of my windsurfing boards were lifted, this was connected to my cars air horns. The trigger was simply 4 small micro switches. I used them in my tent much the same - connected to the car airhorns. If the gear in the tent was disturbed or if the wires to the car were cut - the air horns would sound.

It was a pretty clunky system, probably more of a deterrent, but I never had anything stolen.

have fun

Hi Wim ,you said PIR type alarm but you don't want a motion sensor I think you will find that PIR stands for Passive Infra red ,that's what is used in a motion detector,if I were you I would go to the camping shops as suggested above but avoid any motion detector as they WILL false alarm sooner or later and you might come back to camp finding an angry mob of campers waiting for you LOL!

Cheers.

Johny boy

The reason for thinking about PIR is that it would only trigger on a heat source hence why I would stay away from ultrasonic.
We would not normally be camp with others. Would be used to deter inquisitive passers by when we are camped alone.
More a fishing expedition than any thing else.

I looked into this and there are a couple of things on the market but I was after an infrared motion sensor type thing. Just to wake me up when there’s some sort of animal near the camp sitethe alarm will sound or a light will turn on. Pretty sure JayCar sells something like that but it was all too hard in the end for me to follow up

In the old American war movies they used an empty baked beans can with a couple of stones in it and the can tied to a bit of string. Can rattled when nthe string moved - well it always worked in the movies :-))

Just a thought but where will you be when the alarm goes off?
It's bad enough being on a campsite with gennies going.

cheers Eric

Hi John.

Another one I found http://www.stealarmor.com/
A bit on the pricy side but interesting none the less.
I'm not sure how practical the hole thing is.

See you at St George.
