The accompanying Link should help you to get started with planning. Summer school holidays can be extremely busy and hot. Make sure you book ferry transport nice and early too.

Greendog, from the feedback I've heard from recent travellers there the most important bit of advice I have is to contact KI and ASK specifically what sites are open. My folks got caught out - arrived late by ferry, picked up the map and headed straight for a camp on the other side of the island that was marked on the map only to find it was closed and they had to trek all the way back in the dark. They were very disappointed to find that most of the campsites were closed due to rehabilitation after bushfires and this information that didn't get although they had called ahead etc for planning maps etc but had not asked specifically. Many people find KI a bit over-rated if you've travelled around a bit, also costly. Hope this helps.

As said above: "Many people find KI a bit over-rated if you've travelled around a bit, also costly"

I would agree to that, I travel down for work regularly and have extended the trip a couple of times to have a look around. There are better things to see elsewhere in SA that don't hit you up for the big ferry fare.

We looked into bush camping but ended up at the caravan parks - you can book in and be guaranteed a site. The limited bush camps were pretty full.

We stayed at the "Western KI Caravan Park and Wildlife Reserve" which was just outside Flinders Chase National Park and was very nice with lots of friendly wildlife around.

We stayed at Western KI Caravan Park and found it very clean and open spaced. Also camped at a council camp spot at Vivonne Bay - great beach. Need a permit from the Council.
We found KI very nice for a two week visit - great scenery and plenty to see. The ferry is expensive but factored into the budget.

We visited KI Xmas '07 about two weeks after the fire. Yes, rehabilitation of some sites and palces might be ongoing and you should check with the Vis Centre and National Parks Office on what's open / accessible. We travelled around KI anti-clockwise from Kingscote.Stokes Bay was an average camp site but a great beach, worth a visit. We camped Western River Cove 3 days, nice beach, average [small] campground, worth a short stay. West Bay and Snake Lagoon camp sites were closed due fire damage but these are among the best camp sites on KI. We viewed Vivonne Bay Camp site but it looked crowded, cramped and not inviting [you may have more luck]. We camped 3-4 days west of Wheaton Beach, in the Nat Park, very isolated and some great walks but harsh coastline [the camp sites were OK].Antechamber Bay camp site was also crowded but a great beach 50m away and thus perhaps our favorite spot on KI. We visited Emu Bay for half a day and thought it could have been worth staying in the caravan park [if possible]. Anyway, expect a crowd, prepare to set up camp in some [crowded] places at sunset just to have a spot overnight. Is it worth the visit, definitely, we drove from WA and would probably do it again if going to tassie or Melbourne. Hope this helps.
