Great Central Road update

We have just done the Great Central Road, Laverton to Ayres Rock, Land Cruiser 100 series V8 Petrol with “off road” van, the road is quite good 7/10……… until you get to Docker River then the road is very corrugated 4/10 so you just take it easy……………..but generally no problem……………Tjukayirla Roadhouse has a good caravan park, also Warakurna Road House has a good Caravan Park, Both very clean and tidy, no problems with the availability of petrol along the way, its opal petrol made by BP, I didn’t notice any difference whatsoever in the running of the Vehicle, its all they sell in Alice Springs………….When you stop at Warakurna go to the Giles Weather Station for the tour, Giles WS is about 1 km from the Road House…………Price of Petrol around $1.95…………diesel about the same price………..At Warburton the Store Manager told us that his diesel comes from Kalgoorlie and the Petrol (Opal) from Alice Springs………….the only wildlife we saw along the entire trip were Camels and one Black Cat,……….. Not one Kangaroo…Hope this helps anyone who is going to do the trip

Hi cobber,
Sounds like a great trip. What type of van do you have? we have a Kedron Xcountry and a 2003 V8 LC and would love to do that trip. Any other tips or must see's along the way?

Cheers

Must sees on the Great Central Road include Gill Pinnacle on the Schwerin Crescent Ranges; Kaltukatjarra campsite west of Docker River; ranges north of Giles met office; ocassional gnamma holes with water [great spots to sit and view wildlife]; ridgeline opposite the Mananytja rockhole [where you can view bats, wallabies, wildflowers, camping]; camp paradise [ridgeline, great views]; giles breakaway [4WD into the bottom of the breakaway and camp]; and if you have the time there's plenty of side tracks off the GCR with places to see. Hema have an atlas and guidebook titled Outback Way, which has all the above listed on maps, well worth getting if you drive the route. Enjoy. It's a great drive and well worth taking your time. cheers.
