Hi guys
I have recently purchased a 1987 Fj73 LC MWB FRP top and (surprise surprise) the rear LSD is worn out. I can purchase a second hand shimed up tight LSD to fit in it for about $600. Or the Lokka auto lockers from south oz for about the same amount (plus fitting).
Which do u think would be the better option?
MOst of my driving is on beach and sandy tracks in lancelin etc. I Bought the truck cheap and as it is just for recreation dont want to spend alot on it.
Your thoughts on this will be much appreciated.
Thank You

Hi. I think you would still have to replace the worn parts of your diff if you fitted the Lokka as it only replaces the hemisphere (centre part) of your diff. The Lokka normally works better than the LSD though.Bob

I used to have one of those.
Do you really need a "special" diff in back?

Even with the LSD working it will only give a 14% bias to the left rear wheel.
It will not even push the vehicle off a jack if you lift the right hand wheel.

Ive been driving the dunes between Perth and Lancelin for over 10 years(inc 5 in a FJ73) and never needed a locker.
I air down to about 17psi and if I get stuck,I air down to 10 and 99% of the time it will walk out of any hole as long as Im not bellied out.

Ive been stuck close to the water a couple of times and airing down to 8psi allowed the FJ73 to walk out like it had feet.

Better to spend a few hundred on a good compressor, tyre deflators and tyre gauge,it will be more useful.
Mattrax would also be useful

By the way ,I paid about $800 for a rebuilt diff with new bearings and fitting inc 12/20 warranty. The shop also tightened up the clutch paks to get the maximum effect

Thanks heaps for your reply guys. Your input was very helpful. Ive decided to leave it is and just get a compressor and some max trax to get me out of trouble just in case. See you in junes or on the beach.
