We are looking at spending a week in the Vic High country in Sep school holidays this year. Can anyone suggest places to visit walks , driving tracks things to do while in that area , places to camp you know what I mean I'm sure.

I have had a look in the archives but didn't find much.

Also is that a good time of year to visit. The Kids are teenagers not bambeeno's.
So any help will be appreciated.

Scoof . :-)

"Sep school holidays"
Don't forget most High Country tracks don't open til 1st weekend in November so places like Wonnangatta are closed as are 1/2 the tracks around Dargo.

Scoof
Don't forget most of the "good" tracks are still closed until the Melbourne Cup weekend at beginning of November, and some may not open then depending on weather. Some areas may still remain closed if they were badly affected by last summer's fires too.
There's a spot on the Parks Victoria (I think) website listing all the tracks closed.
I'll leave it more knowledgeable souls to recommend areas that will be accessible.
Cheers
Jeff

During September a great area to visit is around Bright. (NE Vic) Plenty of caravan parks between Myrtleford & Harrietville & free camps up the Valleys of the Buffalo, Buckland & Ovens. Will still be enough snow on the hills for a play on the tobbogin with plenty of bike trails & rivers to canoe. The area is renouned for food & wine & has plenty of 4x4 tracks still open leading to Mt Emu, Lake Cobbler, Mt Sarah & around the historic gold town of Beechworth.
Mt Buffalo is perfect for easy walks & Mt Feathertop for a more challenging hike.
Best maps of the area are the Rooftop series.

Thanks for the replies , as I know zip about this area , we don't really care if we get to the see snow or not , just would like to explore the area .

Could I trouble you for more info if you have the time.

Is there a general direction to go like start here and go this particular way or just wing it as you go. Never been to this area do not have a clue.

As we only have a week don't really want to go over same ground if we don't have to. I suppose you are allowed to fish in the streams or rivers.

I suppose the caravan parks would be busy on the Vic School holidays hope the SA school holidays don't clash so we may be able to still get a site, we don't mind free camps if that's the way it goes.

Thanks again for your replies.

Caravan parks in the area are not normally full during September as it's the quietest time of any of the school holidays so I'd suggest you'd have little trouble getting a site. Heaps of free camp sites with no facilities up many of the valleys. The 4x4 network in the area has hundreds of kilometers of different grade tracks. There are no specific trails you must take as such, rather you just choose a destination & take which ever route you want. A few places like Lake Cobbler only have one road in & out at that time of year due to seasonal closures.
Best idea is to get a map of the area & plan from that. You'll find all the camps, lookouts, track closures & notes on them. Fishing should be open from Sept on. There are specific restrictions & bag limits applying to some rivers & lakes but you'll get that info when you purchase a licence.
Cheers Craig.........
