Hello

For those that dont know - the latest release version fo OE is now available (Version 3.95.5b).

OziExplorer

Major change is ability to use Google Earth (GE) and Google Maps (GM) images as background. Basically means you can load data directly from OE without need to export or import data from GE/GM. Seems to work fine.

Apart from downloading the new update you also need to read the associated GE and GM web pages

support for Google Earth and Google Maps within OziExplorer

and download two "map" (calibration) files that, when loaded, initiate either GE or GM inside OE.

Cheers
Greg

What this means is that if you have a 3G broadband connection, you can use GE in Ozi and run moving map and follow your trip on GE..

So if you dont have a detailed map of the area, you can fire up Ozi with GE and see where you are. Sounds great. But, pity 3G isnt everywhere.!

According to the release notes, Google Maps cannot be used with Moving Map. No mention if you will be able to or not in the future.

Yes, this is true, but at least at this stage you can use GoogleEarth to navigate with. The street names with GoogleMaps would be good. Hopefully one day...

I take it you'll be doing this conversion next so you can use Ozi in the deserts.

Hey Doug, you picture of the AWAC and Darwin brought back a memory. In 1972 I was doing a job at Berrimah Farm, there was also war games being played around the top end. On this particular day up in the sky I seen a British Vulcan Bomber going basically vertically straight up with one or our jets I think it was a Sabre trying to catch it and it just didn't have a hope in hell, the Vulcan was leaving it for dead.

G’day Ron,

I used to enjoy those exercises as well. The noise levels were momentarily overpowering as the airport came under high speed, low level “attack.”

That wasn’t a Sabre you saw as they were out of service by then, replaced by the Dassault Mirage. However, what you would most likely have seen chasing a Vulcan would have been an F4 Phantom from the RNZAF. I understand that the Vulcan’s crew (usually five personnel) got into strife during those exercises because they demonstrated some of the aircraft’s capabilities which the Brits didn’t want publicised.

I didn’t see the incident you refer to but did see another which I heard later got the lads a bollocking. I was at the two and half mile with some other observers watching a Vulcan passing directly overhead at high altitude. From the south-west we observed an F4 heading towards the Vulcan at high velocity. To our amazement the Vulcan accelerated away at such speed the F4 didn’t catch up to it. It gave the impression of instant high speed like watching a dragster.

As an aside, the Vulcan upset some Darwin residents at the time because it would release chaff to cloud the radar. This frightened some of the residents.

Transit Store for me with Freddy Vaugn (senior), Fitzy and Freddy Graham when he wasn't down the track. All dead now. Tom Calma too of course and hasn't his son come up in the world now! Saw him on TV a couple of weeks back giving his major speech as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner. His dad was a terrific bloke.

Collin Collins was a work mate of mine - he's just had major heart bypass surgery which he blames on his years of addiction to Pauls Ice Coffee!

We'd better be careful or we will be accused of chit chat.

Yes I agree with you on the Calma clan. My leading hand was Benny Lewfat. His brother Terry was in the stores section I think. They were/are a great couple of blokes as well along with ttheir families.

Sorry to hijack the post fella's.

In the late 60's I was working on the project to construct a water pipeline from The southern bore fields into Darwin. WE had a straight cleared line for several km and some of the planes would fly along this line below treetop height. You would not here them coming, just an almighty bang as they went past at dot feet. Scared the life out of us every time.

Richard - sorry for late reply, hope you find the geology maps and name search database useful.

"how do you get OE to work in the desert?"

Not sure what you mean by this. Are you talking Google Earth in OE or just plain old OE with "normal" maps?

Cheers

Sorry

Greg, was just taking the bleep out of DT's futile attempts at humour..

Haven't had a great look at the maps yet but I sure the geology maps and name search database will be very useful..

I just got HEMA Western Australian DVD Maps Road and 4WD Atlas, nice little package,

It will be my map on the screen for general driving around WA

Cheers

Hi Alan
Whats not working? The update to the latest release version itself is straight forward. Trick is to also downlaod and install the two Google Earth/Map Ozi calibration (map) files (link supplied). These are placed by default in the C:\OziExplorer\Maps folder. Then just like you do when opening a normal map LOAD google earth "map" - this cranks up GE inside OE and away you go.

Cheers
Greg

Hi Greg,

I can get Google Earth control to work sometimes. It sometimes is "jumpy" and it is hard enough to get a view of Australia, let alone parts of it.

Here is a screenshot of Oziexplorer control. I cannot get any more than a white screen, though tracks and waypoints are shown.

Image Could Not Be Found

I had trouble installing both calibration files, with Vista's program compatibility assistant screen coming up. It says this program may not have installed correctly etc. Though after repeated attempts I have managed to install the files without this screen coming up.

I guess it is still experimental, so am not too concerned yet.

Regards
Alan

Richard,

Load up the map "GoogleEarth.map" from the C:\OziExplorer\Maps directory after you have loaded all the files etc.

And make sure Google Earths graphics settings are set to DirectX
