I am looking at doing the canning this time next year. In the mean time there are a few things I would like to do for piece of mind (torsion, trailing arms, sway bars etc upgraded to aftermarket for piece of mind).

Running all standard in regard to these but I do have TJM 2" lift coils and shockers.

The one part I am really confused about is the CV joints. I hear how the aftermarket ones are much stronger but then I read elsewhere that different parts are suppose to break before others to protect more expensive parts (for example the CV is designed to break so you don't damage diff parts etc?).

The car has done many thousand km's of off road driving and survived so far but I would suspect that the Canning will be the heaviest load to date hence the upgrading. Rather than do it now than sit at well XX fixing stuff and cursing myself for being a tight a** 12 months earlier :)

Anyway this is all new to me so can anyone help on what I should do.

as far as cvs are concerned........if you've done heaps of k ms without trouble....do them .even if just for peace of mind.............i did ...have done most things as such...wheel bearings right round....and all bushes....just so i know .shouldn't have any problems ...touch wood......before you go...spend the doe .get a GOOD ..4x4 shop to go over every nut n bolt ..(pre trip inspection)...if its a little suss replace it ....for a trip such as the canning.....better as you said to spend the money before you go ....recovery out there ..are nearly as much as a new 4x4......and there's your lives.....nuff said..

Hi Gossy,
Have to agree with Bundy Boy, do the lot and have peace of mind. I did the CSR last year with 3 other cars. I even went as far as replacing my uni joints as they had done may K's, along with the CV's, wheel bearings, checked the brakes etc.. The only thing that may be of interest is that we had a GQ along with us and the only issue with that vehicle was the after market Long Rang Tank. The bolts kept coming loose (we found this out after it feel out the first time). If you would like to email me I can send you a list that we made up for the trip that included spare to take.

Have a great trip, it's one you'll never forget.

gossy,
I travelled down the CSR in 2005 ,I have a GQ in standard trim except for
poly airs bags . in preparation for the trip I repacked front wheel brgs
changed all the oils, full service on engine and auto transmission replaced all shocker bushes , hoses and coolant changed brake fliud . the trick is put the new parts on the vehicle before you go and keep the old bits as spares . As for the CV,s I don,t know what you think your in for on the CSR but there,s nothing that sholud damage the vehicle other than speed and overloading .
we had 2 vehicles and carted all the fuel and gear for 7 blokes an 3 motorbikes
and 2 weeks of supplies . my vehicle carried 280 lts of fuel plus 5 swags and carton s of beer, coke tins of food .the other vehicle carried 400 lts of fuel an diesel and the rest of the guff including 2 fridges . for the 11000k we did,
2 punctures for the 4wds and 3 for the motor bikes .
by far the best trip and the everything went as planned .
cheers mechpete

Hi Gossy,

I have done the CSR in 08 and 09 in my Patrol GUIII and understand your concerns. I was luck and the only issue I had was a weeping F/L strut. It was a TJM XGS strut and survived and was replaced on return to Darwin. Overall I would say if you can afford it and you have doubt, then replace. If you have the room etc, keep an old CV for a spare. Obviously this depends on your load carrying ability and who else is going with you.

All the best for your trip mate

Dave
