ExplorOz CPU use - further to 71230

Further to the earlier thread - I'm not so sure it is just an IE8 problem as such. I am running Firefox and Safari on Mac OSX (10.5.7) on a MacBook Pro. CPU use is sitting at 80% on each CPU core and the cooling fan is roaring away as I type this (in Firefox 3.5.2). I had put it down to all the Flash animation in the adds I see as a non-financial member. There are 5 Flash based animations on this page. Guess I should become financial. A few other pages (not ExplorOz) with multiple animations cause this.

ExplorOz is a tough site to explore (I have a couple of Macs too) - Safari locks up and CPU is getting belted. It is not a particularly friendly site.

I am not financial and certainly wont be just so I can get rid of ads.

Firefox on a windows machine hovering between 24 and 31% - must be a mac thing... ;)

Testing on a MAC system now and cannot see any real problems in using the site. Currently testing Safari will try a few other browser shortly. Have you updated your Flash player lately as it was the problem from the last post?

PS: I would prefer these posts be emailed (info@exploroz.com) to us for action as we do not want the forum cluttered up with browser and PC issues when clearly this is not a majority issue.

Hi David, It may not be a majority issue but I suspect that it may be bigger then you think. I suffer in silence and :-))

Hi David,

I'm with KiwiKia on this one.

I have days when the site is nice and fast and other days when it's like a slug. I'm still trying to figure out what the common thread is for this behaviour.

It doesn't seem to be related to the PC or operating system I'm using as it happens on everything from my EEE PC to a Core 2 Duo and on XP Pro, Win 7 (Final Beta) and Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope. The amount of time I've watched the Firefox status bar say "Waiting for www.exploroz.com..." could be better spent planning the next trip! :-))

David, as KK said, I think this is more than the odd isolated incident and if we don't comment on the forum, then no one will know that others are having problems. Like KK, I just wait for the site to come up and wonder why it takes an age at one time and yet is really snappy at others. It's a puzzlement.

FWIW, I suspect that my ISP (Optus cable) may have something to do with it, but that obviously isn't KK's problem in the Land of the Long Wide Vowel.

Cheers,
Chris

The common thread as per the last long post was that the problems went away after a Flash player update so please do this and see how you go. I would love to be able to solve all the problems but every machine has different OS, browser and not to mention connectivity to the internet and security software. From our testing which runs 24 hours a day hitting the site - we do not see any ongoing performance issues.

If you account is slowed this is a problem and I am trying to find out what the story is, there is a Site Tips blog about a test that seems to solve it for a number of people.

Do yourselves a favour and speed up this and many other sites that bash you with pesky flash ads that bog down your system.

Download and run this little add-on to turbo charge your browsing.

I realise that some sites will not appreciate you "closing your eyes" to ads but it is either this or stay away from the site for me.

Regards

Neil.

I too have problems with the speed of this site. It is often slow yet at other times fast.
Have Downloaded IE pro to see if it is any better.

I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.
