Gday everyone
recently i purchased a 2003 SR5 hilux turbo diesel which i love. My first expensive car haha..
the one problem i am having with it is with the fuel economy and im not sure how to rectify it. in the 3 weeks i have owned it, i have filled the
tank twice.
it's a 65 litre
tank and i have been getting only 450km from it, which roughly comes out at 6.9/L which is real upsetting as a main reason i chose to get a diesel was for fuel economy. does anyone have any idea what the problem could be and how i can fix it???
i have recently had a service, and the mechanic reckons its all gravy so im at a loose end at the moment. any help would be much apreciated.
thanks

Hi thesims,
Does it have larger diameter tires fitted? Is the air cleaner clean?
I noticed the fuel use go up with bigger tires, I have 31"s. I also get better consumption on BP Ultimate.

I also have 2003 T/D and like you love it. 114K ks and same figures with fuel. Running Coopers ATRs. My mechanic here in
Torquay also loves it, (Bulletproof) but with such a small
tank it shows up as a bit thirsty having to fill every 400-430 ks.

I've got a 2001 Hilux 3lt turbo diesel (not SR5.)
Don't believe there's any real difference except yours probably has ADD instead of locking hubs.
Standard 205/16
wheels. 115L long range
tank.
I get about 11L/100k around town without trying. Thats about 9Km/Litre.
(And the speedo is accurate)
Maybe you need a stronger spring on the accelerator. :-)

Have you done a proper fuel consumption test to get your figures ?
Or are you just working on an empty gauge reading.
When I had a 65l
tank in my hilux I still had maybe 10 or 15 litres in the
tank when the gauge read empty .
Fill your
tank full, set trip meter to zero, travell a few hundred k`s, then fill again, Then you have the exact litres used for the km`s travelled.
I find it hard to believe you only get 6.9l/100kms
Cheers

Could be driving style. Driving at too low revs might not allow the turbo to increase the efficiency.

hi there
we also have a hilux 2002.
tank used to be 65l and we used to need around 10 to 11 l per 100ks. tyres 31'. now we have a longrange
tank 115l. and we had a Dpchip fitted and now we average just under 10l per 100k. when we pull the caravan (16') we came down to 12l (driving around 85/90). We also have a finer airfilter perhaps it helps.
6.9/L does not sound right.

Gerry

Sorry, My mistake.
If you were getting 6.9l/100kms You would get 942kms per 65ltrs. Which is fanatastic mileage
But it does not calculate as 450/65 = 6.9
It calculates as 65/450x100 =14.4l/100kms
Which is not too good.
I was getting 13ltrs/100kms towing a camper trailer and ute full and running 33" tyres.
cheers

One thing I can suggest is that you never take a diesel down to the point where the fuel warning light comes on. Try runnung some fuel system cleaner through it like Chemtech or Dr Diesel to see if it clears things out a bit. Also, start using BP's ultimat diesel in your rig.
Overall I'd say that you need to sort out the injectors.
