GQ Nissan and Tow Ball Weight

A mate who has a GQ was told today that the max TBW is 200 KGs and that any weight put in the back of the vehicle decreases the TBW. So how do they work this out...you put 200 KGs in the back what does the TBW come do to?
One more question for those who tow with GQs what do you tow?

Hi there.
First, there is a max GVM ( vehicle mass) for the GQ. Then, there is a max rear axle loading within that GVM.
So the load on the back axle will be what's in the GQ itself, plus the Towbar Load (TBW).
So what your mate was told is that the more you put in the vehicle, the less you can hang off the back.
What your mate should have been told is that the available TBW is the total rear axle permitted load, minus the weight inside the vehicle.
But the main point is that, if your mate uses the full allowed 200kg on the ball, then this will limit the amount of gear he can chuck in the back of the Patrol.

Nah, the other way around.
IF you put 200 kg's on a towball, thats 200kg's LESS you can put IN the back of the patrol.
Just say you can legally put 750 kgs in a Patrol (I don't know what it can actually carry), You MUST allow for whatever towball weight is going on as well, so if you have 200kg tawball weight, that will come off the 750 kg you can carry, you now can only carry 550kgs + 200 kgs totalling 750.
If you put 100 kgs on the roof that will also come out of 750, so, 100 on the roof + 200 on the towball, permits you only to be able to put in 450kg's in the back.

The tow ball weight is simply the weight that is placed on the tow ball when you hitch your trailer or van up. The trailer or van should be loaded at the time of weighing.

The only way to correctly establish the TBW is to weight it. I would think that putting 200 Kg behind the rear axle would influence the TBW, but not by much. You need to weigh it. Hope that helps. Cheers.

Barry. I think you are talking about weight behind the axle of the van or trailer, and its effect on the TBW. I was talking about weight in the Patrol over or behind the back axle, in addition to the TBW imposed by the van

uncertain, it came with the vehicle 420,000kms ago - I have always assumed it is Nissan - it is tongue type and I have a Trigg hitch. I have had since new!

Thanks for the replies everyone, let him know what he is up against.
I told him to check with his insurance company to see what they have under their policy. I had to check with my insurance to see what the Isuzu's could as they do not have compliance plates for towing and was told that they can tow the same as that year Jackaroo. But the tow bar on my Wizard is for a Jackaroo 1996 2500kg and 250kg tbw that is not going to happen vehicle only weights 2000kgs

I pulled the Supreme with my GQ when I had it. It had no troubles pulling up Blackbutt range......surprisingly heehee. I could just go full noise at the corners up there where in the GU I have to slow down but it still did it easy if you ask me.

Others have guided you sensibly with weight issues so I won't repeat what is already said.

Cheers, Trevor.
