Gone Bush, Thanks for sharing that info, did the LCOOL guys happen to find out if the rear track now matches the front as well with the new model?

Sorry pops,

no info on the rear track width at all so far.

Personally I wouldn't expect it to change. I think Toyota have introduced airbags and ABS to the 70 series and that's about it.

Even tho I am a Toyota owner, and a 70 series V8 owner, I think that the new dash looks like each part was designed by different members of a committee who never actually got together in the same room to see each others work.

Either that or Toyota just hired the same team that designs Honda's dashes.

why would Toyota be putting out a new model of the 70 series?

They have different model all around the world, just because the Middle East may be getting them doesn't mean we get them does it?

Cheers

Richard, if you went into your local Toyota dealer today and ordered a 70 series it would have this dash when it arrives.

If you took those photos off the Toyota website they depict the 70 series as it is right at this moment. But if you ordered one, it would have the new dash.

It will all be released, along with the updated 200 series in about 2 weeks.

Wonder does the new model have more electrics also. Seems they just have to install the new dash to accommodate the Air Bags that the mines insist on. I think the new dash looks horrible.

Dick

Funny really, the air bags on mine sites was raised in the "The West" new paper over here.

it was said that the standard 70 series was no problems as the horn button on the steering wheel was big enough to accommodate an air bag, and a passenger side air bag would go in the glove box..

Agree they could probably fit the air bags into the existing dash so I am not sure why they needed to change it. I rather like the existing dash.

Me to, between work Utes and the Troopy I've been looking at it for well over twenty years. why change it now.

One of the reason for going for the Troopy rather than another Prado was that I would not cry every time I drilled a hole in her...

Toyota's engineers should have consulted the West Australian Newspaper. A Paper for a reputation for printing facts. Then they could have saved a ton on engineering. :-)

Hi Richard
The dash in the images sure doesn't look broke to me, If it is not broke why fix it.
I like the fact when you climb in to my 2008 troopy, you are looking at that old dash, looks just the same as in the 1986 Jap import MWB I drive on the farm, just like an old familiar friend.
I don't know how you would fasten the various gadgets and things that seem to get added to the old flat surfaces, just look back at the bug eyes on the updated model and wonder?.
Not that I am against change but!!
Cheers

"if you went into your local Toyota dealer today and ordered a 70 series it would have this dash when it arrives"

That would make it misleading for Toyota to keep the old pictures on their website - what you order will be distinctly different from what you actually end up getting.

The 2003 has only 150000 km's on her now so she's good 450000. I wont have to move the NavNet screen till then..

I'll side with Richard on this, not about if it's coming or not but the plain functionality of the dash now, so easy to fit little Cig lighter sockets on the sides of the dash or other attachments, it's flat and it works, things don't fall of it, I love it,

Not one of these can you utilise the end of the dash, the area between the end and the door, and put anything on any of them and it won't stay there 1 minute on corrugation.

I agree with what you are saying Doug, but I still like the dash of my (OK, it's really Mrs Bush's vehicle) 200 series:

COMFORT and POWER.

Compared to the 70 series, . Both these things just over-ride everything else.

I agree with you Doug but if you look at the picture that GB posted in thread 71287 you will see that it still has plenty of room between the door and the dash sides to stick stuff.

In fact it may have more room than the previous dash with the area beside the face vents increasing the height of the dash or at least giving the appearance of extra height??

As I said in the other thread It will grow on ya after awhile like the new generation body shapes we all seem to hate when we first view them but after awhile its just life.

There is a lot of talk that the mines are insisting on airbags and abs brakes but has there been confirmation on this. Is anyone out there who has FIRST hand knowledge that this is a major buying concern for mines. Mines have used toyota utes for years now without airbags or abs - what has changed. Most mine sites I have been on have very strict speed limits that negates much need for airbags.

Could this talk of the LC70 series being not good enough, could just be competition talk to find a weakness in the toyota tough truck. I believe these changes will soften the toyota work horse.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Just my thoughts

It is an issue David.

BHP won't have them on any of their sites without airbags. Mind you, there are plenty of other miners using them, but, yes, OH&S requirements are what put the pressure on Toyota.

BHP has a pretty poor safety record at the moment so they need all the help they can get. another miner Killed yesterday east of Kal

I agree BHP has had a run of poor safety. Having been the brunt of some of their safety nazis, I came to the conclusion their safety rules are so restrictive that people are simply ignoring them.

When you make the rules too hard people will just ignore them.

Saying that I don't recall any of the recent accidents being from lack of air bags. Knowing some of the terrain they travel over on mine sites I would expect airbags will be going off all the time with multiple broken arms & fingers. Of course yet to be seen.

I read in America you can legally have your airbags disabled by the manufacturer under certain circumstances. Also some of the latest cars are coming with an airbag disable switch. So many unneccesary broken bones from air bags.

Have yet to own a car with air bags or meet anyone with an airbag story first hand so my words are only speculation at this stage.

And what makes it even sillier for underground vehicles is that most mines (certainly BHPB) they are limited to a top speed of 30kmh (some 25).....I doubt the airbag would even go off at that speed unless you hit the wall square on....which would be pretty hard to do...

But yes to reconfirm airbags are certainly a pre-req for BHPB sites and it has nothing to do with Nissans being any better...on the contruary I've worked at many a site where the mine has tried Nissans and quickly gone back to Toyota's (for underground use that is).

It will (if not already) the day come that unless your got an Air Bag you wont get insured. Or band from driving.

I haven't worked on mine sites for over 10 years now but can remember when you could drive into the super pit (it wasn't then) in a Commodore or a Falcon, and that wasn't a Ute. straight off the plane hire car little Red tool box and just drive in.

1 week in Kal back in around 1998 4-5 people (workers) die,

Cheers

My 2005 F250 Lariat, imported from USA, has a switch where the airbag on the passenger side can be disabled, I think mainly so as you can carry a child restraint seat there.
So it can be done.

If the new 70 series is going to be equipped with ABS brakes as well as airbags, I hope they also incorporate some sort of a system to be able to turn the ABS brakes off for when driving on surfaces where ABS can be a liability.
ie. greasy, loose surface, heavily corrugated conditions where you need the brakes to lock with controlled brake use.
I have only had one (at fault) Insurance claim in the last 40 or so years of driving, that happened whilst trying to stop an ABS braked 4x4 on a greasy surface overlying a hard track. While travelling not much faster than walking pace headed off a bull and turned it through the gate while I braked, as you do. Then thought.
OH S - - t!!!
Nothing happening and the vehicle quietly carried on into a tree, unfortunately a branch impaled the grill, radiator, just missed the oil cooler, and the hood connected with more tree. Some $4000.00 dollars for the Panel Beaters coffers.
My initial thoughts were I must have a broken brake line then realised that there was still pressure with the pedal.
With the ABS system and the greasy surface in effect the brakes were completely ineffective, without ABS the wheels would have locked up, cut through the slop on top, down to the hard and we would have stopped in plenty of time.
On making a claim with my Rural Insurance Company I found this was quite a common occurrence with ABS equipped vehicles, might be great on the hard and fast, but not so flash on loose, slippery surfaces.
I am even more pleased I bought the Troopy last year, old fashioned dash, brakes and all.

It is not only mining companies demanding the new safety features. Also government departments are demanding them as well.

Also do not forget that it is looking like Stability control is going to become mandatory in all new vehicles in the next few years so manufactures will need to start preparing for that.
