Hi
Wondering if anyone out there has actually towed a 16ft expanda on an xtrail ?
I understand all the weights and know the xtrail is ment to pull 2000 but we are looking at atm 1800 has anyone else done it and how does it tow ? We are about to buy the jayco and of course all the sales people say no worries but we are not sure
Thanks

Hello emma J
It may also help to ask this question of the Expanda owners
forum.

If your vehicle has a maximum towing capacity of 2000 kg and the van has an ATM of 1800kg I suggest that you are likely to be overweight by the time you load
water, food, clothing, fishing gear, outdoor chairs, awning, etc. Might pay to look at a lighter van/combo.

Hello all.
Whilst I agree with not pushing the
boundary of a tow vehicles tow rating etc, for clarity it needs to be pointed out that the plated Agregate Trailer Mass (ATM) is the actual maximum loaded weight of the caravan. It would have a Tare Mass (TM) of something like 1500kg.

Don't understand you, DIO: if the van has an ATM of 1800 kg, you can't put more than 2000 kg in it without making it unroadworthy, uninsured and distinctly unwise. I may have misunderstood you comment, but it seems to say that your actual weight = ATM plus
water, food etc., which is not true for anyone!!

PS what I am saying is that the van will be unroadworthy with more than 1800 kg, regardless of the towing capacity of the tug: even a full size LC cannot tow an Expanda that weights 2000 kg, if the ATM is 1800 kg.
So there's no point in upgrading the tug if the problem is with the van

Emma
I am currently pulling a 16ft Expanda up through Central and Northern Queensland but I am using a Landcruiser. Dio is right once you load it up with
water and such you will be overweight. The expanda we have is the hard lid off road model and we got just before xmas last year and it is great.
Your fuel expenses will be an issue as
well. We are have paid anywhere from 1.26 a litre in S.E. Qld and as high as 1.82 at Adels Grove but that is an abberration. I am a member in the expanda
forum so I will check it oout for and get back to you.
The Xtrail will be a problem unfortunately.

Emma
It has been done but the fuel economy was shocking and in the end the people concerned upgraded their vehicle. Also when it came to towing up hills the vehicle struggles alot.
Hope this helps.

emma
from the x-trail
forum - this is an advisory page prepared by the people who run the
forum:-
") Caravans - Your traditional full bodied caravan is probably a little too heavy for an x-trail. At around 2000kg you are pushing the limit of the x-
trails ability, and the aerodynamics are appalling. For short trips it would be ok, but not for longer trips. Caravans need to run at around 15% of weight on the tow ball, so anything over 1500kg total is starting to exceed the tow ball capacity. But pop-up caravans (eg Jaycos) or
camping trailers are ideal for an x-trail. With less weight, and better aerodynamics, they are a match made in heaven .........conclusion the x-trail is an excellent tow vehicle if you are towing less than 1500kg. In the range of 1500kg up to 2000kg only relatively short trips are recommended, but its nice to be able to go to 2000kg if required which most other softroaders cant handle"
Where they refer to Jaycos I think they are talking about the Jayco wind up camper type van.
I Hope this helps.

Please see my comment above: upgrading to a Pajero may be a good idea, but it WONT help you to load the Expanda above 1800 kg, because the ATM is just that!.
If you want to tow over 2 tonnes, you'll need both a bigger tug and a bigger ATM for the van
