Just watch him, young bloke on there P's like to put them on there roof, and they go over rather easy. Hence the nickname Rollux. Fit some big wheels to make it more stable, and a little less powerful and ya laughing. Any model, as long as its got minimal rust and ya laughing, though i would probably go for a 5 speed. Cant go wrong with getting a 4wd brought for you as your first car, especially something as good as an old Hilux. Good start i say.

I had an 89 hilux dual cab with 2.8D in it. If your going to get one get a diesel, the previous model/shape had the 2.4 diesel, the 2.4 in my opinion probably a better motor then the 2.8. The 2.8 will chuck a main bearing very quickly if the oil and filter hasnt been changed regulary (every 4k, no more then 5k max). Prett much the same for most diesels but others you will get away with a bit more. They are generally fairly good for rust providing they havent been running up and down the beaches or live near the salty air. this will kill them like most vehicles. The petrol motors either the 2L in the earlier ones or the 2.4L in the later model are ok but are fairly thirsty and both motors dislike water, even a decent splash under the bonnet will stop them real quick not like the current 2.7L which you can blast down with a high pressure gun and it will still start. As far as speed goes with a p plater the 2.4 or 2.8 will keep him out of trouble. Neither will impress him power wise but will go all day. You probably wont get any more then 120k flat knackers out of either the 2.4 or 2.8 maybe a bit quiker with a tail wind or going down hill.. Check that it doesnt jump out of gears, eg put in first take off witha good amount of right foot then back off straight away if it jumps out of 1st then it will cost some $$ sometimes only a bush, Check for noisy diff (common), check for rust under the side flipper window rubbers, if rubber flooring lift it up and check for rust in the floor area, open front doors and check in lower frong guards where sand builds up if not flushed properly, check the beam that runs just behind the rear wheels. its a round tube that runs from one side of the vehicle to the other you can see through it, this is a common place for sand to get trapped, hub seals (leaking), if you can get some one behind in another vehicle and give it a good run up some steep hills, check any excessive smoke, (maybe pump injectors) you will get some but shouldnt be a smoke screen, if any blue smoke walk away from it, (engine rebuild/rings), check the rear and front leaf springs to make sure thay have sufficient u shape appearance if inverted the wrong way will need new springs. For 6 g's what ever you buy will probably need things doing to it, you will be hard pushed getting a 88 upwards model 2.8D in good nick more likely the earlier shape witha 2.4D. Look both great vehicles plenty of parts, if looked after and serviced well you should see 500k out of a motor. I sold my 89 model just over two years ago with 300 on it and is still going strong, the bloke has wound up nearly another 100k since I sold it to him. Keep away from things that are turbo, neither of these vehicles were sold with turbo motors. DONT buy a surf. yes there cheap and go better due to the turbo BUT they hate aussie heat and WILL let your son down, blown head gaskets etc.. On top of what Ive mentioned then you obvoiusly get down flat on your back lay under the vehicle and spend some time checking everything out. sill damage, bash plate damage, oil leaks etc, this will give you some indication wether the vehicle has been used for some serious rock hopping....Regards Steve M

Keep an eye out for 4 runners as well, as their are similar mechanically to luxs but have often had an easier life. But stay away from the v6, lots of head trouble but as Steve said the diesels are reliable as was the 22r petrol motor. Ifs front ends handle much better then leafs, but not as good off road.
On runners the main problems seem to be the rear power window. I sold mine at 215000ks and it never had a single rattle.

Hi Warren, as Pete has mentioned the 4 runners also running the same motors etc and as Pete has said probably had an easier life, the earlier ones some did have leaf spring front and back ??? not 100% on that but better on road with the IFS but lack wheel travel compared to leaf front and back..The newer shape 4 runner with the 2.8 definately had less rust issues then the one with the 2.4D remember Im talking 4 runners. the earlier ones had a removable rear hard top, still a great vehicle and look good with the top off but now with age they are proned to leak more and for some reason I have seen a fair amount of rust around the top of the fire wall. Like anything check it write out you obviously know roughly what your looking at having a 4b yourself. My mate bought one years ago and his heart overtook his head and ended up with a bucket of sh%t, had turbo, big wheels, great stereo. All the best with it anyway.........Regards Steve

PS Pete you going on the day trip to zigzag Colin (Toni) 23 of this month (sunday) has organized ?? Hope you can make it

Sorry for being off topic Warren. Steve was looking forward to Sunday, but Sally has broken her ankle in three places, and unable to drive even an auto. My young bloke has down hill bike racing on Sunday and I will have to take him. But what time are you meeting at the Zig Zag? Will try and get their to at lest to meet everybody.
Cheers Pete
