I have enquired at a 4wd shop about installing a second battery for the prado (2004). They told me that it goes behind the driver side headlight but it looks a very tight spot.
Does anyone have a second batt in this spot - a photo would be great.
Cheers

James

Have a look at this link.

I think the Pradopoint link above involves a D4D. There will be other threads on this site if your vehicle has a petrol engine, or the earlier model diesel.

A N70 size battery will fit behind the drivers side headlight, which equates to a max battery rating of around 100AH (maybe a little more or less depending on the brand of battery). The only other under bonnet location is up against the passenger side firewall but there is less room than behind the headlight. Depending on whether your Prado is petrol or diesel, either location may require the relocation of some components.

for all things Prado check outPradopoint

Thanks, that is exactly what the 4wd shop said, I just couldn't imagine how it would fit but obviously it does.

James - in my 2003 model it fitted behind the drivers side head light and in the 2008 model it is in the same spot - although it may look small it does fit. Both these vehicles were diesel.

Ours is a petrol, but the advice from the 4wd shop was the same.

James,

I have an auxiliary battery in my Prado and it does go behind the drivers side headlight.

Just make sure you get a GOOD battery tray because a cheap one that isnt fixed properly will cause the inner guard to develop cracks if you use the vehicle on dirt roads.

There is plenty of anecdotal evidence of this on Pradopoint.

There was an EO member who was offering a discount on one he had developed for his own Prado. I dont know if he is still around, maybe someone else can shed light on that point.

Cheers,

Thanks Cruiser
As it is a tight fit it would need to be a good tray as it would be close to the surrounding vehicle parts whcih could rub with movement.

James.

The tray needs to provide good support especially on the side of the inner guard.

A cheap tray will only bolt through the top of the inner guard and with the combination of the weight of the battery and movement when on rough roard, the vibrations cause the guard to crack.

This is the problem I have and I now have to get the problem fixed before I buy a tray from offroaddownunder.

Cheers,

Cruiser

My second battery is behind the headlight and it fits well. I was concerned about the cracking stories caused by corrugations in this position, but ARB assured me that the tray they'd fitted would eliminate any such thing happening.
I'm quite happy with that and now have to find those damn corrugations to try it!
Cheers.
Alan.
