I have check the route planner on the home page and it says to go up to Armidale and turn right, get to the coast and turn left and it will take 9 hrs 21 mins.

I have been a few ways up to Main Beach including the above route. Yet I have found the quickest way is up the New England Hwy to Ipswich, turn right and use the motorways to Main Beach.

Has some thing happened in the past few years to make the coast 40 minutes quicker?

Only change I know of is the Byron Bay to the Tweed is a lot better in the last few years. New road and dual carriage way most of the way.

Got agree with you there John.
Also the Brunswick bridge upgrade & also the bypass around the air port &Tugun, they've really made a big difference in travel times.

Yeah Jon,

That Tugun bypass around the back (west) of the airport that went in last November has cut another 10 to 20 mins of the old road past the back of Kirra.

Boo Boo

There has been quite a lot of work on the Pacific Hwy in the past few years. Almost all of the smaller towns have been bypassed.

That's pretty much what I'd do. Brings you out at Grafton. Otherwise up to Tenterfield and then down through Casino.

Yep - I'd go the route planner way. Once you come out at Grafton you've only got a bit of crappy road into Ballina and then it's freeway all de way. Easy. The other route that Mr Bitchi put forward as an option is v-e-r-y hilly especially if you're towing. The Grafton route is fairly hilly but no comparison to the other one.

I am going to give it a go. We are now going to take two days so time is not an issue.

But,,, I am still going to see if it is quicker than my way. LOL

Nomadic Navara

Thanks mate, thats the way I normally go.
Up until 2 yrs ago we went to GC every yr for about 7 yrs and tried a few ways and straight up and turn at Ipswich was the shortest.

Your repy confirms it.

I am now going to check whereis against a few other routes and see if there are variations.
