In mid September we intend to go to Lightning Ridge heading west from Gundy as opposed to south. I just need to know if the road is open/viable.
The route is from:

Gundy via the Barwon Hwy to Nundigully

south from there to Thalon

Then west via a road that runs by the railway line to Noondoo and on to Dirrranbandi via Thallon.

It's the road from to Thallon to Noondoo that is the worry. Is it a private road for the rail or is it public? It's dirt and only 44kms long but it makes the journey shorter.

Dirrranbandi to LR is a formality from here.

The road from Thallon to Noondoo is a public road & mostly it is a dirt road. Like all dirt roads the condition can change but overall I found it to be ok whilst towing a caravan through that area last December.

Fuel might be a problem in Dirranbandi as the only fuel outlet burnt down yesterday & until other arrangements are made locals will need to go to St George to get their fuel.

I'll make sure I fill up in Gundy - it's only 400 kms to Lightning Ridge which also has fuel.

If it rains, there is a wholly bitumen option so it should work out OK

Thanks for the feedback to everyone.

That section of road should be OK as I am pretty sure they will have it graded or in the process of grading it ready for the wheat harvest.

I'll confirm tomorrow with my council contact if you like.

The road from Thallon to Noondoo is able to be done in a 2wd bomadore if you drive to the conditions.

Thanks again to my contacts at the Baloone Shire Council ;)

There is fuel available in Hebel & if you phoned the Hotel you could confirm this.
