Well,,,, we have been in Blackwater for 7 weeks and go back to Scone on Saturday.

The fuel prices in Blackwater have had me puzzled for 7 weeks and I still have not found the answer.

There are 3 service stations here. Shell, Caltex and BP.

For the entire 7 weeks fuel prices at the Caltex and BP have been consistently 11 to 17 cents higher in price than the shell garage.

How they continue to survive is a bit of a mystery to me. I have rarely seen a car getting petrol from them. Yet the Shell is packed all the time.

Now to caravan parks. I recently read in the local rag that many locals are worried that Blackwater is becomming a 'donga' town for single blokes.

An example of this is that the caravan parks have now built dongas and have the bare minimum room for caravans. In fact having a look at the parks there is no room for caravans. What they appear to have done is put some permenent vans on site so they can keep there caravan park status.

A quick drive around town shows dongas popping up every where.

Lets face it Blackwater is a mining town and they have to have a place to stay.

Want a good meal in town? Although there are weverel places to get a good meal in town we found the Workers Club is the place to go.

The shopping centre is fairly small given that the town has a population of around 8k. From what I have been told the locals prefer to shop at
Emerald or Rocky.

The Coal Centre is their big tourist thing and is not a bad place to visit.

Finally, the natives are friendly and the town is worth a look at if you are passing through.

Boo Boo

Well it sounds like things haven't changed much in nearly 40 years. I remember spending some time there in the early 70's. My brother was working in one of the mines there which they were still setting up. Most of the workers lived in caravans in a temporary van park not far from the pit head. They used to send a car and box trailer into Rockhampton once a week to get their beer. It was cheaper to do that than to buy it in Blackwater. We were woken up one night by the guy in the van next door - seems they were pouring concrete down the mine that night and some silly bugger had ordered too much concrete. By coincidence the guy next door had just finished forming up to pour his 20 square metre slab!!!. So there we were at 2.00am in gum boots pouring and screeding concrete. Ahhh those were the days!!!

Can't give any insite into the fuel prices but it is definately a miners town. My sis in law lives there (school teacher) and her husband is a miner. Prices of most things are expensive in Blackwater esp fruit and veg and meat. They travel either to Emerald or Rocky to do their shopping in bulk. Chemist doesn't even stock kids cough mixture!!

I think it may be the bakery that sells "The miners burger"(at the top end of town, ask and someone will tell u)have you tried on of these??? It is a must see, the bun of the burger is approx. the size of a dinner plate. Unbelievable until you see it and even more if you manage to eat it!! We got one when we were there and hubby struggled to finish it!!

Is definately a town to visit or stretch your legs.

Er, excuse my ignorance, but what's a donga town? Is that mean it's full of temporary/demountable huts like they have on building sites?

Yep ... Dongas is an old slang for temp accomodation buildings.

At least Blackwater hasnt gone "hi-rise" yet.

I Like it.

Delightful colour schemes, your choice of viewing platforms, complete with planter boxes and out door settings. Inground pool and even a wind mill.

I reckon it's than where I live now (boring old Melbourne).

And a greenhouse! I think you'd want to take it in turns viewing the scenery from that Penthouse suite though - looks a little unstable way up there!
