Here is tonight's Australian Explorer Question:

Which river, whose mouth is at the Gulf of Carpentaria, was named after a man who died during an expedition, when he, along with James Calvert and John Roper, was speared by natives.

Rivers Name: 3 Points

Bonus 2 Points:

Which European town was the leader of this expedition born in?

The ditch that runs along the side of roads to carry away storm water was named after James Calvert.

It is the Leichhardt River

Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt was born in Sabrodt, today part of Tauche, Prussia (now Brandenburg, Germany).

I have found 2 different references that say Tresbatsch in one but Sabrodt in another.

But the Tresbatsch one appears to be a more reliable source.

Email sent Rick.

Next week will be the last question in this series but depending on the level of interest I would like to start another series in the months leading up to Christmas. As Phil B said in an earlier thread anything that promotes our exploration history can't be too much of a bad thing.
