Hi all,

Just looking for enlightenment on a vehicle I saw this morning. Was a late 90's Toyota Hilux Dual Cab 4WD with flat tray but dual rear axle set up.
Was this a model made off the shelf, or is it most likely a custom job?? Was painted in army green colour but definately not an army vehicle.

Asking the question for my young bloke. He reckoned it looked pretty cool having 6 wheels.I told him I'd hate to have to put tyres on it.
4 are expensive enough!

cheers, LE

LE,

they are a custom job. There are any number of engineering places that specialise in either lazy third axles or six wheel drive conversions. The army have a lot done down in Geelong. I believe that Landrover used to do factory 6 wheel job usually for military applications. Our SAS have used 6 wheels in overseas theatres for quite a few years as well. Not cheap tho. The VicSES have just taken receipt of a 6 wheel drive, extended tray converted 200 series as a mobile response/command post. Nearly $200K worth!

Cheers Mick

For offroad you definitely need a 6 x 6 as a lazy can can leave you much worse off.

The SES has recently taken delivery of six 76 series Toyotas converted to 6 x 6 with the back of the wagon cut off so they have a dual cab.

I was looking at the Mansfield one a couple of months ago.

They reckon it goes like a rocket even at 6 tonne GVM.

A bloke in Dalby used to do the conversions, but the problem was the vehicle used to get hung up on the lazy axle in a dip or coming up a steep bank - so six wheel or added lazy axel conversion should come with winch included.

Can go home enlightened and sounding smart enough for the young'un!

It did have a lazy rear axle and a winch on the front.

The Canadians make a thing called the Argo. It comes in six or eight wheel versions. It is also amphibious.

Jeremy Clarkson owns one, and wrote it up last week.
