CSR

Hello all

Wondering if anyone has experience of being a passenger on the CSR with Diamantina Tours. Our Patrol is ULP, and only carry 220 litres of fuel, therefore haven't enough fuel to get us across the longest stretch, so have looked at doing the CSR with a tour. Tour itinerary sounds good, fully catered etc, swags and not tents, however, wonder if 18 days from Alice to Alice is too quick and doea that mean some very big big days sitting in the 4WD for long hours!!

There is no way Harry will trade in our 4.8 Patrol for a diesel, so the above is the only way we can get to see the CSR.

Your helpful comments as always, will be appreciated.
Cheers

My Parents went as passengers with Diamantina tours on the CSR a couple of years ago.

Andrew is a very good cook, and they formed quite a good friendship with him.
They have since been on another tour with Diamantina and again, thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Since they haven't stopped raving about their experiences with them, I suppose that they must be alright.

Seems a waste leaving the vehicle at home. Might as well buy a commodore

Yes, it does sound a waste of time - however, will leave vehicle in Alice but as I said Harry won't agree to trade in 4WD for a diesel model, so cannot do the CSR as is. Have done ourselves many of Len Beadell tracks out in WA and NT, but just not the CSR, something I really want to do.

Perhaps I should trade in Harry, afterall the 4WD is in my name!!

Dare I say it ??

trailer...
(for your extra fuel, water, & whatever you might otherwise be carrying on a roof-rack)..

On appropriate (read _LOW_) tyre pressures all round (incl. trailer), your 4.8 will handle the dunes with ease, and with sensible driving technique, you will _not_ damage damage the track.. Certainly far less damage than an overloaded vehicle with correspondingly high tyre pressures will cause..

(been there & done it;-))

Have fun;-))

PS..
IMHO, 18 days Alice-to-Alice (via CSR) is waaay too quick if you want to enjoy the experience............

I would also recommend working out a way to carry the extra fuel

Hi Troopy (SA)

With 220 litres - means we have 40 litres on roof top! and Harry not keen to carry any more ulp on top. I would much rather do it ourselves, however as mentioned earlier Harry will not trade in 4WD for a diesel.

We did the Simpson last year on a 4WD tagalong and the tour leader, with whom we have done several trips previously and respect his knowledge, kept a record of our fuel consumption across the desert. Whilst we did well with fuel on that trip, said he felt we would not have enough (for emergencies) to do the longest stretch of the Canning, hence this is the only alternative I believe. I personally tend to think 18 days is a bit quick, but haven't found any one else who does a private type tour. I might add Harry has doubts sitting up close and personal, as a passenger in someone else's 4WD!!

It is possible it will be something I will have to put into "file 13" for a rainy day when I might be on my own!!, however, by then will be too aged to contemplate such a trip, so all the more reason to do "today" rather than wait for "tomorrow".

Jinki if you're travelling with others maybe they can carry a couple of jerry's for you. I've been looking at the logistics of doing the CSR myself and as you say with a petrol vehicle it's a bit of a stretch.

How much are they charging for the Tag a Long as a passenger??

As said above get a good off road trailer and carry your extra fuel in the trailer.
Probably find that the amount being charged by these operators would go along way to funding a trailer.

A good off road trailer will handle the CSR without and real issues so long as you drop tyre pressures.
Drop me a MM with your email details and i will send you a few photos of my recent trip.

Cheers
