canning stock route

Hi all. I'm planning on doing the CSR (Wiluna-Halls Creek) in 2010 with my NP diesel Pajero and would love to hear of anyone's recent experiences in traveling the route. At this stage it would be most benificial to me knowing what vehicle preps people did beforehand, especially in relation to the Paj and what fuel consumption those with d-id Paj's went through. However, forward your experiences on from all vehicles as this will give me indications on what I should be looking at with mine beforehand. Cheers and I look forward to your responses.

Shane.

Hi Shane,

The CSR is one of Australia's most remote treks.

Suggest that you go with a group as a tag along.

You will need to ensure that you carry enough fuel for at least 1100 Km of soft sand driving, suggest 200 Lts + minimum, as resupply can be sporadic.

Also food and water for 3 weeks, working on 5L per person per day, not including washing water or emergency radiator supplies.

Remote area comms are essential, HF radio and or satphone. These can be hired from various places if you don't wish to purchase them for the trip.

You will need to carry vehicle spares, eg: belts, radiator hoses, spare shocks, 2 spare wheels, and maybe a spare case. Tools, compressor and tyre repair equipment, assortment of fuses and electrical stuff. Tyres should have 75% tread or more.

Camping and cooking equipment.

Make sure your vehicle is well serviced by a reputable person before departure and make sure that they are advised that the vehicle is going to a remote area.

That's all I can think of for now, no doubt others will jump in as well.

Shane,

If you have not already done so ensure you read the preparation sections (and the whole document for that matter) on the Canning Stock Route trek note. There are links to the What to Take and various other documents that may assist you in answering some of your questions. Of course the forum is also a great place to get further information good luck with your planning and have a good trip. Did you know we are having a Gathering (10 anniversary) near Wiluna in 2010 - ensure you have a look at this is in the Trips & Gatherings system (WA - 2010 National Gathering), you are most welcome to register & attend if you are in the area at the right time. I am sure there will be a number of groups heading up the Canning before and after the actual gathering.
