CSR fuel consumption

Im looking through the trek notes on fuel consumption for the CSR under the the 6cyl 4.2 diesel part .
There seems to be some wild variations with some using 14/100 and one going as high as 23/100.
I can see not all of them have done the same total distance,so obviously some may have encountered much worse conditions.

Are these variations normal due to climatic conditons and terrain types or is it that some people cant keep accurate fuel records or use the pedal properly?

Im considering doing the CSR in a HZJ75 ute. If anyone has accurate fuel records for one of these or a troopy it would be appreciated.

It does not show that they could have been towing as well.

When it is all said and done the best bet is to use the average numbers which are summarised on the trek note itself and give yourself a fudge factor. I am going to do some trek fuel updates to allow the recording of towing, turbo etc but at the end of the day you can expect between 14 & 20, it depends on so many factors including how heavy or light your foot is. When we do the Canning we take our onboard 240 litres and 3 * 20 jerrys. A total of 300 litres and when we are asked about what to take - this is the number I quote for a 4.2 litre diesel engine. It gives you the scope to make a few side trips and ensure that you will not be on the side of the road 20 kms from the next fuel location.

David,

Thanks for the info. Will be doing the CSR next year sometime after the gathering and a 182L replacement sub tank is on the list of upgrades. My CSR trip at this stage is already full.

Just completed CSR in 12 days with a group of 4 vehicles. I drove my 4.5l V8 troopy loaded with about 500kgs, including complete recovery kit, comprehensive spares, fuel and water. I was quite possibly the lightest loaded vehicle that I came accross on the route.
Wiluna to Halls Creek, inc Wolfe Creek, consumed 280l of diesel, (less than 2 new 3l 4cyl TDs in our party). I believe that the low fuel usage was due to light load, light foot and skinny tyres. Had no troble with the dunes with 25PSI in the rear.

Big agressive tyres look great, but...

Hope this helps some.
Happy trails, Colin

Hi Colin, in July 1984 I went up the top half of the stock route in a 83 Landrover with a 3.9Lt Isuzu Diesel with standard 7.50 x 16 Dunlop cheesecutters 26 PSI and got 20 MPG (too tired to work out comparison eg lts), my mate with a 76 Landy with slant 6 Petrol got about 6-8 MPG.
Cheers
