Hi Doug
I saw one up at
Burketown in 1996 one morning - was pretty spectacular.
Got a photo of it at work - will try and dig it out on Monday.
Think it is referred locally as the 'Roll Up"
Cheers

Gidday Doug
About thirty five years ago I came across another interesting cloud formation.
We walked in from
Scotts Peak Dam (Tasmania) and camped one day in the late afternoon at a place called Goon Moor Lower. From this position, there’s a spectacular view along the Western Arthurs Range.
We were brewing up a cup coffee, when the bother in law said, have a look at this!
Cloud formation had reached the top of the range, and then started to descend in what could only be described as a giant
water fall down the eastern craggy face. We were so mesmerise I don’t think either of us thought to take a photograph.
It went on for
miles and I've never see anything like it in my life.
Regards
Kim

Their is a scene in the original Man From
Snowy River movie that show something like that.
I have seen a similar thing while staying near
Mansfield a couple of years back. The cloud appeared to be piled up in a high valley and was falling over the rim of a saddle like a
water fall. I have photos somewhere but they don't really tell the full story.

Hi Doug
Yes, we have seen two Morning Glories - were at
Karumba in the Gulf of Carpentaria some years back - once in 2002 - it was early morning around 6.45am - an extraordinary rolled long cloud sweeping in an arc above the
Norman River after a very humid night. And a second time, in June 2005 when flying to Sweers Island from
Karumba -
the pilot had to divert so as not to fly through it, however, it was a fantastic sight from the air. Don't think they happen anywhere else other than around the Gulf area.
I tried to upload a photo unfortunately it didn't work. If I have any success will send to you.
Cheers
Jinki

Hi Doug again
Just looked at your photos above and they do happen in other parts around the countryside. The first photo at
Burketown is very similar to the first we saw in 2002.
Cheers

I saw one in
Karumba in the mid sixties, beutiful sight.
I believe they only occurr in the Gulf and somewhere in China.
I was told it it caused by winds blowing in from the Coral Sea and as it goes over the Divide it starts the rolloing wave of cloud.

I know that they can occur in
places south of the Gulf because I saw one while
bush camping near
Tennant Creek many years ago. It occurred after dawn but before the first rays of the sun reached us. I think that it was keeping pace with the the line of the sun (terminator ?). It was horizon to horizon (north - south) and travelling east to west at (I guess) about 30 kph. and at less then 1,000 feet. The thing I remember most was the whistling noise as the roll passed over us like a low level high speed glider flying by. I did not know what it was at the time but it was a very memorable phenomena. I would love to see another one.
