Does anyone have any info on the Sphere TV in the Jayco Sterling? Friends bought a new van last month , can't get a picture, reckon it's not a digital TV. Any thoughts?

Are the channels tuned in ? Does it have an aerial connected ? Perhaps it is only a monitor and requires a set top box. Check with Jayco or whoever sold it to them.

If it's supplied by Jayco prima facie it's cheap and nasty.

cheap nasty. Kogan was another expensive bad experience
now have a Celestial and works brilliantly. Recommended to me by TV techo who said
well made for price and good tuner. Guy parked next to me last week with Teac could not get analogue and tried his box on my aerial and still not a decent picture. another camper with Kogan dead

It needs a STB to get digital TV channels. I know this as we have a Sterling with the same set up. Tell your friends to buy a HD STB so they can get all the channels though.
We bought our STB from our local RV centre and its 12v/240v which is very useful for when we are staying unpowered. It cost around $250 from memory.
Hope this helps.

My Jayco Sterling has one of these TV's fitted. Though it's not the best it suffices for the amount of watching that I do.
A couple of things need to be checked, one is a 'booster' that is installed in the pantry cupboard, this has a push type button to activate, and when turned on a red LED light will show. Unless this is operating the thing won't work.
It must be tuned, easier if you use the remote supplied, for each different location and the antenna must point towards the signal source.
Also, check to ensure that the 12volt plug is inserted into the back of the set, I know that this is an obvious move, but sometimes I still forget, similarly to antenna cable.
I hope this helps.

We have a July 2008 Sterling with Sphere TV. It is analogue only. You will need a set top box for digital. The analogue system works fine. I hate to ask but your friends did do the auto tune procedure, didn't they? Check in the manual if not. That is the first thing to do at every new location, otherwise you probably will not get any station.

Fancy expecting Jayco to install a digital receiver. The analogue ones are obviously available now at throw away prices because as of next year they will be useless without a set top box.

Hi Teege,
What a very odd comment! I didn't expect a digital receiver. Before we bought our Sterling, we looked at a number of other brands, and guess what? Not one of the others offered any sort of TV as a standard fit. Jayco was the only van that we looked at where a TV was included as standard. We do not watch much TV either at home or when we are travelling, and so for us (for now) analogue is fine. If we eventually decide we want digital, an STB is available at very low cost. For now, we use the van TV mainly for watching DVDs, a job for which it will remain
well suited until it wears out.
As for everything in a Jayco being cheap and nasty, you apparently haven't looked as closely at Jaycos and other vans as we have. In general they share the same equipment and fittings.
You may not like Jayco, but 49% of the market does. It is hard to argue with that sort of success over so many years. In any event, to each his own. It would be a boring world if we were all the same.
Cheers,
Terry

If you don't think they are cheap and nasty ask them why they don't warrant their roof sealant for more than 12 months. They put a new factory made roof on my poptop after a hail storm and when it started to leak after 18 months I was told the sealant was my responsibility after 12 months. I was supposed to get up regularly and check the condition of the sealant. The independant dealer that I went to for the repair told me he is constanty replacing what he describes as the rubbish sealant used by Jayco. Before that when I wanted to buy a spare of set of bearings for a long trip I was told that I had to remove all the existing bearings to check their serial numbers. Jayco didnt know what type of bearings they had put in. They obviously buy them in job lots and bad luck for the consumer when he wants to replace them.l Just a couple of the problems I have faced over the years, I could go on.... You talk of 49% of the market. See how many people have bought a second one!!!

Hi Teege,
You have an opinion which I respect but don't share because it is at odds with my experience. I am one of those who did buy a second Jayco because of the complete satisfaction I had with the first. There are a great many others who are repeat customers. They wouldn't have 49% of the market without them. Can't comment on the sealant: I've never had a problem. I have bought a set of wheel bearings for both my previous
Penguin camper and my current Sterling, and I didn't have to pull anything off for Jayco to supply the right ones. All I had to do was give them the model and serial numbers. Anyway, there is no point arguing. You have had your experience, I have had
mine, and after looking very closely at other brands, I am still extremely happy with my Jayco.
Cheers,
Terry
