If you want to check ThreadID: 69873, you will see the problems a mate has had with his Cub Spacevan, well the saga continues. He was looking for some stuff that had fallen behind the Cupboard that holds the Stove in his camper and as he leant against it the whole unit moved. On checking the rear of the Cupboard had torn through at the bolt holes, so the whole unit was now free to move around inside.

He has repaired it himself by putting some thicker slightly wider sheet over the holes and rebolted to floor, the reason he didn't even worry about contacting Cub, is if you look at the previous thread, you will see they have been no help.

Again this post is mainly put up to warn any current owners and any thinking of purchasing one of these units. Remembering again, we have travelled all the same roads as hime, at the same speed with same pressures. We were towingh our Jayco Eagle Outback, which isnt really built for serious offroad work, but we have had no problems..

Blaze,

I just read your thread you posted a while ago (69873).

The leaking canvas seems to be an issue with CUB. When we were at the Brisbane Caravan and motorhome show last year it rained so we jumped inside a CUB camper to get out of it and on looking around the inside of it there was water pouring in onto the bed. This thing was leaking like a sieve.

It was not only them that had leaks, as we also had a quick stop under the awning of a Modcon soft floor and it too was leaking inside the tent area.

Alot of people will say that canvas can leak, but if it is good quality canvas and sewn properly then it should not leak!!!

We have a Cape York Deluxe Explorer (hard floor), bought it second hand and we have been in some big storms and not had a single drop of water inside the camper. It is 15oz canvas. We also wet the canvas down after every trip.

We also have never had an issue the canvas ripping (or even coming close to ripping) with flipping the camper out or closing it up. If a manufacturer warns people of this then I believe that they have made an inferior product. They obviously know of the faults but do nothing to fix them.

I am not saying that our camper is perfect, as we have had issues with it (swing arm bushes flogged out, electric brakes not working after it was rewired) but as it was second hand when we bought it I expected to have some, but have fixed them myself.

Thanks for putting up the thread. People need to know about these issues before purchasing a camper.

The only way some of these guys will fix these issues is if people stop buying them and purchase another camper. Because if they start to lose sales then they might have a look and see why, and if they don't, they deserve to go broke!

To be fair on CT makers.....ALL canvas will leak ( at least somewhere) until it has seasoned...

If it leaks AFTER it has been seasoned....then thats when you could call it inferior...

Why do you wet the canvas after a trip ??

Once it has seasoned and taken up all the gaps, it won't get any better than that !!! But if it makes you feel better ??

Some manufacturers make an "inferior" product because people want to save money and there is a market for them....and people ( sometimes ) understand that is what you put up with to save that money....

On the Canvas issue, we have a Tvan and have been in some high winds with pooring rain and it hasn't leaked a drop either. Just proves if it is made properly it shouldn't leak.

Our Pioneer had a small leak after I'd wet it down and dried it 3 times but it's now sealed itself after having been in a couple of downpours.
A mate said he had a Cub years ago and because of his experiences he wouldn't buy another camper of any kind!
Don't ask me what they were but they must have really peeved him as he's a placid sort of bloke not prone to getting upset about things.
Good luck with sealing it up.
Alan.

Gronk,

If you are going to take a camper trailer to a show then you would think that they would do their utmost to make it the best possible, like making sure things weren't loose, canvas is not going to leak etc etc.
How hard would it be for them to make sure that bolts are tight, hose clamps done up properly, or give the canvas a couple of wet downs?
If they cannot be bothered to do this for a show when possibly thousands of people will see it then I'm afraid they don't care for their product.

We wash it down after every trip due to the bird droppings that we find on the canvas. We spot clean but as you are using water to wash it off we might as well give it a little bath.

I understand there is a market but, it is for this reason that we are a society that just says...Lets buy a cheaper product and save money...instead of buying a much better quality product for a little more and getting quite a few years out of it, and only buying it once, not 3 times!!

Hello Greg s....we have a KK and have had NO issues with quality....but manufacturures have a very small lead time to get their trailers to a show and as such probably have no time to "season" their products....and also probably not expecting it to rain also......but as you also say...there is no excuse for not displaying their products in the best light....

Well...as for hosing down after a trip??? We have been away for over 70 trips and haven't hosed down once....but we shoot any birds that come close .....( only joking !!! )

Gronk,

It doesn't matter where we camp, in a clearing or in the shade under a tree,we always seem to get lovely blobs of bird droppings. I swear they must use it as target practice. haha
