Hi folks,
we will be travelling the Dukes Highway in about 3 weeks time and it looks like we need an overnight stop around Bordertown or Keith maybe as far as Tailem Bend, Camps 4 only show roadside rest areas. Can anyone suggest somewhere off the road a bit. We don't need any facilities, just a bit of quiet.

Thanks Lance,
We can check out the border one first, and if it is too early go on to Keith. Perfect.

We found a good old gravel pit. On road heading south from Keith, then on a minor road heading south east not far south of Keith. It was well back hidden in the bush and a nice quiet spot. We were coming the other way, having left Bordertown via the 'runaway holes' drive. We past a rural tennis court and nearly stayed there but it was very near a house, so continued on and found the beaut gravel pit. Can't guarantee it is still available as it was three years ago, but in SA they usually don't block them off like they tend to in WA.

Away from home, so cannot be more precise. We woke up to find everything white with a thick frost.

Thanks Motherhen,
We love gravel scrapes, having used many in the past. I am at work now, but I will try and pin it down on a map tonight.
Mike.

Hi Mikee

Darn - the directions i recalled have vanished into cyber space. I will try again.

From memory, on the road heading due south from Keith, take the road heading SE towards Bordertown. It is a few kms, maybe up to 10 kms, south of Keith.

Follow this for around 9 kms. Just after a bend further southish, look for a track into the scrub on the west side. Maybe 500 metres or more in to a nice flat area.

SA is usually kinder the WA about leaving access to old pits and old roads, but i can't guarantee that after 3 years it will still be open.

Hi Mike

Also worth noting that less than an hour to the north of border town are several areas in the dessert parks with both free camping and nominal honesty box type stuff , some like Pertendi hut are caravan friendly right off bitumen road. From that place you can also take just the car and do a little excursion straight into some sandy tracks.

Thanks Robin,
I saw these areas on the map but probably won't go there on this trip as it is a bit of a rush.

sorry for the lack of info but I'll try :(

There is a camp site within a reserve about 30 kms (?) east of Tintinara. Nice sandy tracks, old ruins and dedicated fire pits. We did the border track a year or two back (nth to sth) and eventually came out onto the main road here.

It's a 'national park' entry with a small sign to the right (heading to Adelaide from Melb). Maybe worth ringing up the local councils??

thought it was still worth an entry into this forum for you because it's well worth it with some basic fun 4wding for about 20 mins to get to the spots.

Maybe someone else reading this can fill in the blanks :)

cheers,

As someone who goes through Bordertown/Keith regularly, I really appreciated this thread and the info supplied in answers. Thank you one and all.
