Hi, we are planning on heading to
the tip next year (2010) Sep-Oct from
perth via
Karumba. Just wondering if we have to start from
cooktown or can we head up from
Karumba??? Do you need two vehicles if you go this way???
Any info will be greatly appreciated, Nath n Lynz :)

You can head up from
Karumba via New Dixie but be warned you go thru low lying swamy country that can be impassable with rain and the
Mitchell river crossing (300m wide bank to bank) is very soft sand. I spent 3 hours winching and towing my FIL's prado and camper first from the river (only 50m of
water at the time) then across the remaining 200m of sand during 40ºC.
The local farmer will assist you at $500 per hour cash up front. There are signs telling you not to cross so for the inexperienced watchout. No trees to winch off, so if you are on your own go right around to Chilligoe don't turn off at Dunbar and go to new Dixie.
But for the experienced group it is a nice but slow drive, we left
Karumba at dawn and camped at
mosquito waterhole as the sun set so allow a day and a half to get to the peninsula dev Rd.
Cheers
Dave

Thanks for the info dave, wasnt too sure about that, thought we may be able to save time but by the sounds of it , it could end up being a costly and even longer trip. Worth asking though. Cheers Lyndsey
