Hi all.

Planning a trip from Victoria, though central Aus. to Darwin with a detour to Kunnunura. The trip wont be for a couple of years, so we have plenty of time for research. We will be travelling with about 8 family members so it wont be a lonely time!
We have a Jayco Hawk....towing with a Ford Ranger 4x2 turbo diesel. With the majority of the trip on bitumen we don't forsee any real need for 4x4 (other family members have L'cruisers that we can jump in for off road sight seeing).
Planning the trip for October 2011. Any thoughts on the wet/dry season timing up north?

Regards, Cooks

October is probably a bit late...starts to get rather wet and very hot then....May is a better time to begin...other than that ,the roads are fairly good (even the dirt ones)some dirt ones can get a bit corrugated and extra care is needed...we tow a 17.5ft dual axle poptop behind a Falcon wagon and have done the trip ( but down the west coast as well )twice now with a 3rd time coming up next year....have not had any trouble at all yet and do not really expect any in the future(although the wagon is getting a little aged...13yrs)...it is still quite mechanically sound and with a bit of care it should be o.k.....with what you have it should be a "walk in the park" or just an easy drive....cheers

Probably o.k , but we are well and truly back in Vic. by that time...it would depend on how long you are spending up there , we take around 3 mths or so to do the round trip .. Vic. to Darwin , West coast , across the Nullabor to home ...cheers

May through to September is considered the most appropraite time to visist. Having said that, obviously you can visit at any time of the year that takes your fancy.
September to April includes the build up to the wet (hot and very humid), The Wet (very wet and many attractions and roads may be closed), Cyclone Season (severe weather capable of destroying cities (Darwin), towns (from east coast to west coast) so as you can see, if you want extreme variable weather then September though to April is the best time to go. Of course the 'extremes' all depend on the timing of the arrival of 'the wet'.
