depending on which site you read and what time of the time etc etc there is alot of conflicting information on how many days it takes to do the Canning Stock Route (confortably, not rushing).

Some say 16 days whilst others say 21. 5 days is a big difference when trying to plan food and water.

So can I please get some advice straight from the horses mouth of the lucky ones here who have done this trip.

thanks,

Hi Gossy,

I have done the trip twice and it was 20 days and 22 days respectively and that’s on the CSR only, obviously you need extra time to get to the start and get home from the finish.

The decision you need to make is, are you going to stop and enjoy the Canning, take in the scenery, walk up valleys and escarpments, look for and at aboriginal art, do trips off to Deibel Hills, Separation Well, have a couple of rest days from the corros etc and drive to wells that are way off the main driving track or are you just gong to do the Canning i.e. go for a drive. The decision you make will influence how long it takes. We did all of the above in our 20 or 22 day trips.

On the recent trip, July 2009, we heard one lot over the radio say “Are we going in to Well 50 its 1.5 kms in?” To me this person was on the 16 day or less trip and was just going for a drive and wanted to be able to say I have done the CSR but he wouldn’t have seen anything.

Also the faster you go and drive your vehicle too hard you will be asking for trouble ie breakdowns. The CSR is unforgiving and you need to drive to the conditions and not your watch.

I hope this helps

Phil

Hiya Phil,
What's your definition of the CSR ie. from 'where' to 'where' ??
Cheers

Hi Phil,

May I ask how far your average daily distance was? Or how many total kilometers you covered in the 22 days. As I am planning this trek and would appreciate the distances and journey times to plan ahead.

Hi Tamery

We did 2500 kms from W51 to Wiluna, Yep we did a lot of side trips.

The average daily distance is around 100 to 120 kms depending on how long you stay at one spot. On some days we did 40 kms and others 200. If you work on an average of 100-120 you wont go wrong.

Also if you plan to get fuel at W33, its shut on Saturday afternoons and Sundays - if you plan incorrectly you will need to add days to your planned schedule.

cheers

Phil

Hi, I agree with Phill"s answer. In 1999 we did 2147 km from Hall's Creek to Wiluna in 21 days but thought it too fast to absorb a lot. In 2004 we returned and took exactly 5 weeks and 2970 km from HC to W. but this included a sidetrip to Rudall River N.P. as far west as Tchukardine Pool. So take as long as you can is my advice. Hope this helps with planning. Cheers, Graham

we done the CSR in 2007 every thing was in our favour (no punctures no bogged vehicles no traffic no breakdowns no holdups of any kind ) and we took our time with 3 nights at durbra springs the trip took 19 days

I've just returned from doing the CSR with 4 vehicles in 12 days. Saw heaps, went to all wells and some side trips, had a great time. Travelled light, did not speed and did no damage to 78 series troopie. I could have taken 10 days and enjoyed it, also could have taken 3 weeks and had a great time.
The most we travelled was 180km in one day. Some days only 3 wells.

Perpare well, pack light, forget the trailer...

We did the CSR is July 09 and I recall saying "Do we do well 50 as it is 1.5km of the track" !!!!!!

This is not because we did not want to see it, but I guess you get a little Well'ed out after seeing them and certainly the ones at the top end of the route are not exactly in the best of the repair.....

Anyway, we did it in 12 days which we found to be a comfortable pace for us. 4 vehicles with 5 people in total.

2 groups we came across, one had done it in 11 days and the other 13.

I admit we did do it just to say we had driven it, but it was also more of a recce trip as we will be come back and will know exactly what and where we want to go and will probably have a longer trip the next time.....

Regards

Dave

Hi Dave

It wasn't you I was referring to - this group had only started the CSR that day and were heading north to south and there were 9 vehicles ion the group.

Having said what I did about taking your time and not racing the trip - the problem some people have of course is they only have so much annual leave and have to push on when travelling or not ever do a run like the CSR.

cheers

even here the difference in numbers is huge ranging from 12 days to 5 weeks. I'm not retired so I have to be realistic about my time away from work but it looks like 20 days would be the average.

I live in Adelaide so I am working on 4 days to get to Wiluna and 5 days to get home via the tanami track.

Thanks all,
