Hi all, has anyone recently (last few days/weeks) travelled the Birdsville Track. Sorry to everyone if I've missed a thread somewhere about it but I haven't been able to find out much. I'll be travelling up it to the races and would like a bit of current information if possible. Thanks

I think I'm a bit confused - you're from QLD and travelling 'up' the Birdsville Track !! Surely there's a shorter (travelling distance/time) route from QLD ?
As for 'conditions', expect a graded (sometimes), stone based road, subject to corrugations, dust and pot-holes. The conditions can vary frequently subject to the volume of passing traffic, the weights and speeds of the vehicles involved and dare I say it - RAIN. For up to date information on outback roads (opened/closed) have a look at LINK .
My approach to outback travel is if I am determined to go and there's no notices indicating roads closed (weather, flooding, repairs etc) I still travel and ALWAYS drive according to conditions. i.e. reduce your speed, allow extra travelling time, take regular breaks, check vehicle,van/trailer etc for damage, loose objects/items, tyre pressures, etc. So in my opinion outback road conditions will always be variable sometimes day to day. To me the most important information is if a road or roads are closed and for how long. This means you don't go forward, however, if a road is corrugated/dusty etc you can still proceed with consideration(s). Enjoy your trip.
