I have been looking at the specifications of some Toyota's.
What is the difference between the HDJ78/79 motor (380Nm) compared to the HDJ100R (430Nm)? Are they the same motor?
Thanks
Marco

Same motor ,but the HDJ100 got an intercooler. Apparently it restricted the airflow around the engine too much on a 78/79 series.
Although Toyota do have a history of giving the top shelf models more HP than the plumbers truck.
If you put a bonnet scoop on a 78/79 I cant see why the intercooler woudnt give you similar HP and Nm

Yeah, just look at the difference in figures between the new 76/78/79 and the 200 which have the same 4.5L V8! (the 200 gets an extra turbo)

Hi
Ross,
The article I have here in an older 4wd magazine has an interview with a Japanese gent who's described as the godfather of Landcruisers.
This particular fellow says there wasn't any room behind the grill of the HDJ78/79 to fit the intercooler. In that era the intercooler in the HDJ100 reside behind the grill and in front of the radiator.
In effect an air conditioned HDJ100 is 3 radiators thick in that area!
It wasn't until the addition of the V8 diesel that the intercooler moved to the top of the engine. Which is why the new 76/78/79 Series all have a grill area similar to the model they replaced.

As mentioned above, same 1HD-FTE motor but on HDJ78/79 is not intercooled; but other differences are there is no immobiliser on the injection pump (so the key is a simple $6 key - no transponder); and the 78/79 has a single N70 starting battery instead of the twin N50 batteries on the HDJ100.
The HDJ78/79 is the only factory TD model with a rigid front end since 1998, which is a lot of the appeal.
