Dash to Poeppel Corner

Doing a two week trip into Western Queensland. Is it possible to do a round trip from Birdsville to Poeppel Corner in one day?

Technically, yes......but you won't have time to enjoy yourself.......

If possible, have a night "out there" somewhere.

We did it in one day, and enjoyed the trip.
In Kev speak:
was it worth it?... Yes it was
Should we take more than one day?.. Probably, but if one day is all you have, do it.
Was it difficult?... Not really, we left Birdsville at 7:00am and got back to the pub at 7:30 pm
What were the conditions like?...Low 30's, easterly wind. Dunes were OK East to West, but the wind over the day blew lots of loose sand to crest over, and returning, we got stuck on 2 dunes. One was my fault because I left the car in 2 wheel drive, and the second dune was Big Red, which we made it to the top, but bellied out, and had to dig it free.
Would I do it again?..... Bloody oath.

We did not stop for more than 10 minutes anywhere except at the Corner for a 40 minute lunch. Took 75 litres of petrol in a 3500cc auto Monterey. We maxxed the speed at 40kph.
Just evaluate the conditions when you reach Birdsville, and decide then.
Not everyone works on an average 200km per day, and not everyone needs to stop every 10 minutes for a rest or photo shooting.
Slower trips do have their place, but if time is limited, I see no reason to cancel a trip due to limited time. If you are travelling as a lone vehicle, just ensure you notify the ranger of your intentions, and take sufficient water, fuel, communication equipment and shelter if you get delayed.
We did this trip in 1 day, we did the Darling River Run in 2 days, and thoroughly enjoyed both trips.
Cheers
Ian
