Gday - well we set off about 5 weeks ago - am now in Mareeba - heading west to Mt Surprise on Tuesday - spent 4 days in Cooktown stayed at Endeavour River Escape about 8 k out of town near airport - great spot. Here in Mareeba we have stayed at 2 van parks - Mareeba Country - lovely & quiet about 6k out of town, and Tropical Tableland - bit noisy, but lots of room and very casual - met up with some friends here who we are travelling with for a few weeks - have new laptop - and Telstra mobile broadband - having a bit of trouble getting email address set up,but will go inbto town tomorrow and get it sorted at Tandy weather is fantastic - much better than Victoria - will be doing a blog as we go along, when I get sortedout with this computer -
happy travelin'

Make sure you go down to Einsliegh from Mt Surprise and across to Forsyth, then either down to Cobold Gorge, then back up to Georgetown.

Have a beer and a great steak at the Wenaru pub in Georgetown.

Hello Julie, half your luck! We are setting off from Newcastle NSW mid September for about a 7 or 8 week trip. We will be staying at Mareeba for a few days on private property. We will be going to Cooktown, but that is as far as we go! Unfortunately, we will be doing a U turn up there & heading home, via mostly the coast I think.
Enjoy your trip & safe travelling. Cheers

Bedrock Village CP great place to stay at Mt Surprise. Is good base from which to do Undara Tour. We used it as base to drive the "back" way to Einasleigh one day. Also is base to fossick for topaz at OBriens Creek, if that takes your fancy. Suggest you stay at Cobbold Gorge and do their tour - very special.
Further west, do no miss Lawn Hill NP. Adels Grove good place to stay there.
Good luck. You are heading into some great country to enjoy.

G`day Julie,
If you intend to do the Undara Lava Tubes Tour may I suggest you do as Wendy has suggested and Stay at the Bedrock Village C/P and take their tour to the tubes. We have just come through that way, west to east, and believe their tour is FAR better value than the "rip off tour" from the Resort at the entrance to the "Closed National Park" that the public is prohibited from entering unless by Guided Tour from either of these two private enterprises.

Just my opinion from a fellow Victorian 13 weeks along a 20 week trip.

Safe travels.
